TOPPETA and ANNUNZIATA surnames

Post by Jem910 »

Need information on any Toppeta or Annunziata you have from Penne, Italy.

Vincenzo Toppeta (name changed to James Topeka at Ellis Island) was born April 9, 1890 in Penne. Immigrated to the US and ended up in West Virginia where he died in 1957 (not sure what ship he came over on yet and don't know if he had siblings). His parents, according to birth certificate, were Carmine Toppeta and Giancaterino Annunziata.

There are 2 entries for him. The first in 1909 (town of origin mistyped when put into computer for ellis island website) at age 24 and then he went back to Italy and returned in 1916 when he was 32. Both times Penne is the town of origin.. Please go to www.ellisisland.org and let me know what else you are researching. Peter

Ptimber thanks!

I had actually seen this already but the misspelled town name threw me off.

Do you know of anywhere online I can find his parent's info for free?

Now I'm confused.

On both entries for this guy, one entry has his year of birth as 1885, the other as 1884. My guy was born in 1890.

Could this still be the same guy? Could he have had a reason to add 5 years to his age, perhaps to get on the ship alone or something?

I too am researching the Annunziata surname. My Annunziata family came from Sarno. My grandfather Enrico Annunziata was born in 1879. He married Angelina Marzone, Marrone, Mazzone ???? (born Oct. 2, 1875 in Caserta) in March 1908 and they emigrated to the U.S. in April 1908. Enrico's sister was Amalia who married Alphonso D'apice. A cousin was Aniello Squitieri. They all lived in Chicago Heights, IL. I have found Ellis Island and census records but I would love to know names of parents and other sibling information. Thanks.

According to Enrico's 1908 manifest, his mother's name was Lucia Manfredonia.

Another possibility for Angelina's surname is Mozzone. Use the following link to search Cook County birth records for surname Annunziata. You'll find three records with Enrico Annunziata as father and on two of them Angelina's surname is given as Mozzone. You can view and save the document images.

Thanks Biff! This website is terrific....what a help. I have been to the LDS website a zillion times and never found anything on my Annunziata family. Any other suggestions? Can I get the family certificate from Sarno with only Enrico's Mother's name? (no father's name) Thanks again. Pat

As far as Vincenzo Toppeta goes, in the original question, His Father Carmine also came over with his Brother Zopito Toppeta, in 1910. I can't find anything on a marriage or children he may have had in the US. does anyone know anything about Zopito? (Vincenzo is my Great-grandfather, and I am primarily interested in him, like Jen's original post, but I would still love to know if I have other relatives via Zopito).
Thanks, :-)

On ancestry . com, I found a 1916 manifest for Zopito Coppeta which I believe was transcribed incorrectly. In all other respects (age, place of birth, spouse's name...) it matches the data from Zopito Toppeta's 1910 manifest.

Since Zopito appears to have left his wife behind on both his 1910 and 1916 trips to the US, perhaps he was "just visiting" and never actually settled here? Children, if any, may have been born in Italy and lived their entire lives there.

I presume you have the 1910 manifest which also includes Carmine?

Here is the link, just in case:
