LOOKING FOR RECORDS ON: DOMENICO SCIALLIS

Post by MarieJosephine »

After doing a few other posting (helping other people), and hitting a deadend trying to find information about my father's POW camp and lost child, I am finally doing a posting to find some additional information on my Grandfather Domenico Sciallis. From the Ellis Island records i found that he came on April 11, 1905- pretty sure this is him because he was from Maida in Calabria. I think that he went back to Italy and then returned again. I cannot find any records of this but the name could have been mispelled. I think he returned after marrying my grandmother in italy. I know he was already in American when she arrived. Her name was Teresa Pettinato. Looks like she arrived on March 11, 1915 with a child (my aunt). I am looking for any additional information on them like maybe a census. It looks like they went to 809 S. 8th Street in Philadelphia PA.

Any information would be very helpful. Thanks everyone!

I am not sure this census would be my grandfather. My father Giuseppe/Joseph was born in 1917 in PA, and he had a sister Giuseppina who was also born in PA. I known from the ellis island manifest that my granmother came with her young daugther Nicolina and then my father and aunt (Joseph and Giuseppina) were born here. They all went back to italy and my father said he was a couple of years old. Not sure if this would be them or not.

In most of the research that I have done in looking for Domenico Sciallis I have come across a consistant address of 809 S. 8th Street in Philadelphia, pa. It looks like Domenico went there to see several relatives - Salvatore Pettinato or Francesco Pettinato who were probably related to my grandmother: Teresa Pettinato. Would there be any type of census for that address? between maybe 1917 and 1920?

Also, does anyone know how I would find out my granfathers parents names in Italy? I know Domenico was born in Nicastro, but I was told he was really born in a small town called Zagorone which is near by. I went there a long time ago when I was in italy.

Thanks everyone!

Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800-1945
Name: Francesco Giampa
Arrival Date: 23 Feb 1920
Age: 37 Years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Europa
Port of Arrival: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Friend's Name: Cousin Domenico Sciallis Box 137 Wellom Grove (Willow Grove?) PA
Last Residence: Maida, Italy
Birthplace: Maida, Italy
See line 15
Page 1
Page 2

From the above manifest, it appears that Domenico was still in the US in February of 1920 living outside of Philadelphia, possibly in Willow Grove in Montgomery county.

Thank you Biff. Yes as I have been told my granfather Domenico did live in the Willow Grove area. I did look at the manifest but do not see a reference to his name anywhere. Curious to know how you found the address as it is near my home and may try and find it. It is really awesome that my grandfather was in this area many years ago, went back when my dad was 2, but died at a young age. Then years later my father would come in 1957 and be joined by my mom, brother and I (age 2) in 1958 and reside in the same area!!!

In my search I did find that Domenico seemed to have relatives on 809 S. 8th Street, Philadelphia. In many manifest's I have seen his name referenced with Francesco Pettinato and Salvatore Pettinato. Being that this was my grandmothers maiden name it all fits. She arrived March 11, 1915 but do not have any further info on her.
Would there be a census for that street from the time when Domenico first arrived in 1905 and after?

MarieJosephine,

I'm reposting links to the Francesco Giampa manifest since I posted an incorrect link for the second page. My apologies.
