Surname Monjack - is this really Mongiat?

Post by drovedo »

Mongiat is a family name. I researched the name and found that my relatives passed through England to the US early in the 20th century.

Is Monjack a bastardization of the surname Mongiat?

Please say it isn't so!

From what I can determine the surname MONGIAT does not appear to be related in any way to Monjack. The Italian surname dictionary has no listing for MONGIAT as being Italian but rather imported from abroad or italianized or further being local in origin based upon nicknames or anecdotes.

The surname is concentrated in Friuli Venezia Giulia region (see www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi

You can further trace Mongiat thru www.familysearch.org and www.genealogytoday.com
