Parma, confectioner in Cincinnati

Post by ShirleyY » 01 Nov 2010, 22:56

Francesco Parma was a confectioner in Cincinnati OH. I'm looking for his Italian roots.

He was born in Italy about 1809, and emigrated before 1838.

He first appears in Cincinnati in the 1839-40 city directory. Many of the Italians listed in that directory were also confectioners. It is possible that they came from the same place in Italy as Francesco.

His Cincinnati city directory entries:
1839-40 Parma, Francis (Italy) Fruit and Confectionary store, 4th bet Main and Sycamore.
1842 Parma Francis, fruit store, Sycamore bet, 2d & Lower Market (Third Ward)
1843 Parma Francis, fruit store, 3rd bet Main and Sycamore
1846 Palmer Francis, fruiterer, N s 3d, bet Main and Syeamore
1849-50 Palma Francis, confec. e. s. Sycamore, b. 2d and L. Market
1850-51 Palma F. conf. n. e. c. Broadway and Harrison
1851-52 Palmer Francis, confec. 172 Broadway
1853/1855 He and his family apparently moved to Tennesee, probably Memphis, but then returned to Cincinnati.
1856 Palmer Francis, s.e.c. [south east corner] John and Wade
1857 Parmer F., confec. 4G3 W. Sth
1858 Palmer Frank, confec, 403 or 463 W. 5th
1859 Palmer Francis, fruit store, n.w.c. 9th and Race
1860 Palmer Francis, confec, n.w.c. Race and 9th

Census records:
not listed in the 1840 census (which probably means that he was still single and living in someone else's household).

1850 U.S. Francesco Palmer, Ward 1, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. OH, p.58A, L35, dw109, fam931. Francesco Palmer 41 abt 1809 Male Italy Confectioner

1860 U.S. Francis Palmer, Ward 4, Covington, Kenton Co., p.673/169, L38, dw1016, fam1201. Francis Palmer 51 abt 1809 Male Italy Confectioner

Francesco died 1860-68. After he died, the family records almost always use the Parma surname.

Probably about 1841-1843 he was married to Catherine Parr. She was born about 1821 in Alsace-Lorraine. They had a large family but only two of the children married. Their oldest known child, Rosena, married twice. Her only child died in childhood in an accident. Their oldest son, Daniel Joseph (or Joseph Daniel) married and had two daughters who both married and had children.

I have followed the children, but none of the records that I have found provide any other detail about Francesco's birth.

Any help in locating Francesco's origins would be much appreciated.
