Anyone have an Uncle Buonocore, Hartford, CT, 1906?

Post by JoeZurlo »

Hello, my appointment with the Italian consulate is in June, 2011.
I'm getting my citizenship, iure sanguinis, have almost all my documents together including my great grandfather Catello Zurolo birth certificate, from Castellammare! But Catello was married a number of times and that is where I'm having trouble proving I have the right guy. In 1906 he arrives in Ellis Island with a 17 year old girl named Maria Laura Demartino, they then head to Hartford to stay with an Uncle Alberto? Buonocore, who paid for their trip over. After Connecticut he moves to Brooklyn, where my grandfather & father are born. I need help in finding the missing link! Namely any Buonocore information from Hartford 1906. Any help is greatly appreciated. So if you're last name is Zurolo, Zurlo or Buonocore, please contact me. Thanks!

Hi, seeming to me, that the uncle was Antonio Buonocore and not Alberto, almost by reading of Catello ship's manifest; it is possible that Antonio Buonocore was the uncle of Maria Laura De Martino.....

also on same ship's manifest, seeming that the girl, Maria Laura De Martino, well seeming the wife of Catello Zurolo, because I read "wife" near the brace...
However I found:

1910 United States Federal Census
about Carillo Zurlo
Name: Carillo Zurlo

[Catillo Zurlo]
[Carillo Levito]
Age in 1910: 26
Estimated birth year: 1884
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Brother (error: no brother, but BOARDER)
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: Hartford Ward 1, Hartford, Connecticut
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of immigration: 1906
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Raphael Anselmi 22
Angelina Anselmi 19
Carillo Zurlo 26 ( Catello ZURLO/ZUROLO)

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6311/catello1910.jpg

Catello appearing single, but frankly, seeming to me that Maria Laura De Martino was the wife on the ship's manifest!
However... who know?

Thank you for the information regarding my great grandfather Catello Zurolo. I'm not sure if that is him mentioned on the census, here is more information according to the documents I have:

Catello Zurolo born 1881 in Castellamare Di Stabia, parents names are Antonio Zurolo and Giovanna Buonocore. In 1905 he marries 16 year old Carmela Gentile, in Italy. June 2nd 1906 he arrives at Ellis Island with 17 year old Maria Laura DeMartino, there final destination is listed as an Uncle "Antonio"? Buonocore in Hartford Connecticut. February 18, 1909 my Grandfather Vincenzo Zurlo is born in NYC to Catello Zurlo (27 yo) and Giovannina Cifaldi (19 yo). I need to verify that this Catello is my great grandfather, I need the missing links between Ellis island, Connecticut, then NYC. Also, Catello died October 22, 1948, age 67. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

I believe that are a bit of confusion... maybe....
Catello ZURLO married at Giovannina CIFALDI in Manhattan, New York, NY the 17 Jun 1905

record:
Cifaldi Giovannina Jun 17 1905 #13690 (1905) Manhattan
Zurlo Catello Jun 17 1905 #13690 (1905) Manhattan

so in 1905 Catello was in USA, right??

now: you said that your ancestor arrived in USA in 1906
First Name: Catello
Last Name: Zurolo
Ethnicity: Italy, South Italian
Last Place of Residence: Castellammare
Date of Arrival: Jun 02, 1906
Age at Arrival: 24y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Napolitan Prince
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0012

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0012

and by ship's manifest THIS Catello Zurolo never in USA before...

so maybe the ship's manifest is not abt your Catello...
what are your suggestions?

Better to search more deeply;
by more detailed marriage record:

Groom's Name: Catello Zurlo
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: Giovannina Cifaldi
Bride's Birth Date:
Bride's Birthplace:
Bride's Age:
Marriage Date: 17 Jun 1905
Marriage Place: Manhattan, New York, New York
Groom's Father's Name: Vincenzo
Groom's Mother's Name: Caterina Coppola

Bride's Father's Name: Filomeno
Bride's Mother's Name: Concetta Ariemma
Groom's Race:
Groom's Marital Status:
Groom's Previous Wife's Name:
Bride's Race:
Bride's Marital Status:
Bride's Previous Husband's Name:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M00658-8
System Origin: New_York-ODM
Source Film Number: 1558403
Reference Number:

seeming that the parent's names of YOUR Catello are different from the parent's names that you provided...
I believe that the above marriage record is abt YOUR Catello, and the parent's names are right, because Catello named the first son Vincenzo, as own father...

by Castellammare birth's index
ZUROLO Catello born in 1881 son of Vincenzo and COPPOLA Caterina
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/3886 ... hindex.jpg
( see red line)

instead you said that the parents was:
Catello Zurolo born 1881 in Castellamare Di Stabia, parents names are Antonio Zurolo and Giovanna Buonocore.
We know that the Catello ZUROLO married at Giovannina Cifaldi in Manhattan on Jun 17 1905 , well the parent's names was Vincenzo Zurolo and Caterina Coppola

so for understand very well abt this mystery, solving also,

I found the original birthact of Catello, born in Castellammare di Stabia the 25 july 1881 son of Vincenzo, mariner, age 30 ( son of late Raffaele) and of Caterina Coppola seamsterss, age 31( daughter of late Salvatore)

birthact image

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/402/ ... rthact.jpg
( read line)

in the bottom the transcription(20 nov 1901) of Napoli Court sentence, and in this note is explained that in the 6 nov 1901 the judge authorized the correction of surname, Zurolo wrote erroneously, and that on the birth act the surname must be correct in ZULLO and not ZUROLO

in 1920 census, for some reason, Catello ( using Zurlo surname instead of Zullo) living in Brooklyn, Kings, New York with new wife ( I believe that Giovannina died before of 1918) Mary:

Parent Catello Zurlo
M 38y
Parent Mary Zurlo
F 36y
Catherine Zurlo F 13y
Vincent Zurlo
M 11y
Mary Cosica
F 2y6m

and the first children having same first names of Catello parent's.

However in USA he used Zurlo surname and not Zullo...

and for let you understand better I can add that ZULLO; ZURLO; and ZUROLO are all surnames in Castellammare di Stabia, but your ancestor was Zullo..

I believe that you received the birth certificate of wrong Catello, because I found by your input:
Catello Zurolo born 1881 in Castellamare Di Stabia, parents names are Antonio Zurolo and Giovanna Buonocore.
that this wrong Catello was born the 22 nov 1881; and effectively married at Carmela Gentile in 1905, I found the marriage act!

instead your ancestor was born:
U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
about Catello Zurlo Name: Catello Zurlo
Birth Date: 26 Jul 1881
Birth Place: Castettamare Diftabia, Italy
Residence: Kings, New York
Race: White

so the birth act that I found is right to 100%:
Catello ZULLO transcribed Zurolo but surname amended by court sentence in 1901, born Castellammare di Stabia the 25 july 1881 son of Vincenzo, mariner, age 30 ( son of late Raffaele) and of Caterina Coppola seamsterss, age 31

so you must request another birth certificate in Castellammare di Stabia, explaining the error...

and at last the marriage act of Catello parents:
groom- ZULLO Vincenzo age 22, born in Castellammare di Stabia, mariner, son of late Raffaele ZULLO and of Fortunata ESPOSITO

bride-COPPOLA Caterina age 25, born in Castellammare di Stabia, seamstress, daughter of late Antonio COPPOLA and of Maria Luigia CANNAVALE

married in Castellammare di Stabia on 31 October 1874

Mille Grazie! I've been reading your information over and over! I'm so happy that you provided the answers concerning my Great Grandfather, Catello ZULLO! I searched ellisisland.org for Catello Zullo but only the incorrect Catello Zurolo, who arrived 1906 is showing up. So when did MY Catello Zullo arrive in America? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I searched not abt the arrival; in 1920 census he declared that arrived in 1890...
but surely he arrived in USA before of marriage date; by italian military record ( I have no the year, but I believe that was around the 1899-1900) he was already in USA!
I found also the second military record, and Catello was declared "person who fails to report for military sevice) and the only Catello italian next of kin-or contact- was the chaplain of Cemetery Church... so you must search around 1890-1900 arrivals... if he arrived in 1890, he arrived with parents or with some relative...

Excellent work, thank you! Now I believe I will need Catello and Caterina's birth and marriage certificates, since I'm applying for citizenship iure sanguinis. You already have the documents I need, what do you charge for certified copies to be sent to the US? Or will the Italian Consulate in NYC accept the scanned documents you link to here? Any help is greatly appreciated and I look forward to your reply. Grazie!

Joe, the Italian Consulate in NYC accept not the scanned documents, so
-you need of Catello birth certificate from Castellammare di Stabia
-and birth certificate of Giovannina Cifaldi also!
-You need ofthe US certificate of marriage of Catello and Giovannina nee Cifaldi
-you need of Vincenzo, son of Catello birth certificate

-you need of Catello arrival and I cannot find it !!! I searched for so much time...
Catello naturalized in 1946:

U.S. Naturalization Records Indexes, 1794-1995
about Catello Zurlo Name: Catello Zurlo
Age: 65
Birth Date: abt 1881
Issue Date: 3 Dec 1946
State: New York
Locality, Court: Eastern District of New York, District Court

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/1337/catello.jpg
and I hope that by petition it will be possible descovering when Catello arrived in USA and the date and ship...
for the birth certificate of Catello, helpful for dual citizenship, well this certificate it is not a problem obtain it, because I can help you, preparing the italian txt explaining to civil records office abt surname mispelled..
