looking for birth records for my grandfather

Post by lbalive » 29 Dec 2010, 16:38

just new to this site - I am lookin for birth/adoption records for my grandfather.
He was born in 1914 and was left at an orphanage in Rome, Italy called Gesu Bambino
He was taken - not sure if formally adopted by a family in the frosinone area
Would like to know if he had any siblings
He was given the surname "Beiforte" at the orphanage.
I have no other information - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very few abandoned babies were formally adopted. They were fostered out by the State who paid the mother a small fee for breastfeeding the child after which it was either maintained by the family or transferred to another foster home.
Even today babies can be left in a safe place completely anonymously. Unless the town he went to has some very good records it is unlikely you will find any additional information. Sometimes the original birth record will name the foster mother but I doubt if this happened in Rome.
