Surname MAYO

Post by PunzoNewHaven »

I am now working a little on my mother's side. Her mother's family (Pucci/Polverari) I am doing OK with.
Her father's side, not too much.

Anyone familiar with the Surname Mayo (she thinks it may have at one time been Maio and her family changed it.)
My mother does not know where they are from.

She knows the other side (maternal) though and writes:
Gustavo Polverari is correct for grandma's dad. When I searched Ellis Island, I found him but not my grandmother. They were both from the Pesaro/Fano area on the Adriatic Sea.

Which part of Italy is that? I see the Adriatic Sea though I do not see the names she mentioned. This is just curiosity. I am really interested in what part the surname Mayo would have come from.As always thank you!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! That is pretty far from where my dad's families are from Naples and Salerno.
What are people from that region called? Like Napolitan for my dad's side/maternal?

Hi Marty,

That is her mother's side, yes. I found a little info. on them. Her dad's side Mayo, I can't find anything. This is what my mother sent me this morning:

Don't know why he was named John (Giovanni in italiano) He had no older brothers. Three younger brothers, Salvatore Maio, Philip Maio (moved to Texas) and James DeVito (another story got different last name). Mayo is really an Irish name..the school misspelled my dad's name since Maio was written as Mayo.

So I am looking for Maio? Right?

Maio is the correct spelling and still present in the area:

Maio 7.65 Urbino Pesaro Urbino
Maio 2.60 Pesaro Pesaro Urbino
Maio 2.45 Ancona Ancona

For each province all of the towns will be listed where the surname occurs, ordered via a numerical value representing the estimate of the number of individuals having the requested surname.

The numbers are shown with a two-decimal precision, meaning that a number of 106.10 estimates there are at least 106 people in the town with that surname, while the number 75.78 means there are likely 76 people in the town with that surname.

My grandfather came from Gramaldi, Italy. He changed his name from Maio to Mayo. I am not related to other Mayos, but am related to all the Maios who settled in Trinidad, Colorado.
