Caicco/Caito surnames

Post by candd4 »

Hello! I am new to the message board, and need direction on how to research my family's name.
All I know from my father's side is that his mother's name is Frances Caito, and his father was Dominic Caito. I know that my grandmother's mother's name was Josephine Caito. My father said that one set of my great grandparents name was originally Caicco, but it was changed at Ellis Island. I don't know which set of great grandparents it was. I think he also said that they came from Sicily.
Any help would be appreciated! :D

I may have found a new lead. My Grandmother, Frances Caito, told me about her father owning a fruit stand that later became a grocery store. I found a web site about Caito Bros. fruit and vegetable stand in Batavia, N.Y., and there was also a link with a Caito family tree. I think this may have been my great grandparents:
Antonio Ardizzone Caito, born November 11, 1887 in Termini Imerese, Sicily; died April 16, 1974 in Batavia, New York; married Josephine Mascari October 27, 1912 in Potsdam, New York.

My grandmother suffers from dementia and unfortunately does not remember a lot.

Hi,

Interesting how your name was changed at Ellis island. People still get my last name (Caicco) wrong. There are plenty of Caiccos in Canada, who arrived from Cleto, Calabria (near Cosenza) where some Caiccos, I believe, are still living. My great grand-parents came to Canada in late 19th c. were married in North Bay, Ontario. Their daughter (one of 6 kids), my grandmother, Emilia Caicco (maiden name) was born there, met and married Eugenio Caicco (also from Cleto, now deceased), and she still lives (and thrives) in North Bay at 95! They had 11 children who are mostly living in Ontario. My father, John Caicco, is the oldest of those kids and lives in Toronto.

My grandfather, Eugenio (Jim), had a brother who stayed back in Cleto and inherited the family orange grove; his son (my father's cousin) is still there, my father tells me, and has a decorative iron business.

I hope this helps your search. Keep us all posted.

Greg

P.S. Photos of Cleto I found on Google:
