Avellino, Italy

Post by jpirone »

I have been struggling to find more information on my great grandfather, Joseph Pirone, and his parents - Salvatore Pirone and Silvestra (Minucci) Pirone. All I know is that Joseph was born in 1889 in either Roccatascerona or Avellino (are both the same area?) and his parents were also from Avellino. I am wondering if there's a site that has records only in Italy? I have tried both ancestry.com and familysearch.org but that's as far as I can go. I hope that there's another site that could provide me with some clues.

Your help would be much appreciated.

I only have information on his marriage certificate and his back-and-forth trips from Boston to Naples.

He was married to Maria Civita Campagna in 1911 (https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... JHR-97Q/p8)

The last name is spelled wrong (pirony) and it should have been Pirone.

Joseph's son, Salvatore, filled out a passport application in 1922 and it said that Joseph was born in Avellino. I only can find that Joe's sibilings (Adelina or Atelina and Carmine arrived in America in 1909. No information on Joseph.

My family told me that Joseph was a bootlegger during the prohibition era and that explains why he had frequent trips to Italy after 1920s. This information is interesting, ha.

What do the census records give as his date of immigration? (There are lots of possibilities at Ellis Island for Giuseppe Pirone.)

I believe 1905. I found one census (2010) that could fit Joe's description and his immigrant date was 1905. I notice that his first varied - Joseph, Giosue, Giuese, and Guiseppe.

From Steve Morse search site...

These are the phonetically searched listings for "Pirone" arriving Ellis Island in 1905 and 1906...

#34 looked like a good possibility, but the age is too old.

I believe this is Joseph and his family in 1930, yes?

Maybe a draft registration card for him from WWI or WWII would help. Have you searched for those, or a copy of his naturalization papers?

This is a manifest for Maria Civita Pirone in 1921; it says she is a US Citizen by marriage. Does anyone know what the handwritten notation (105998 - Aug 14, 1919) indicates? Is that info about Joseph's naturalization?

I have been researching the records from il Comune di Roccabascerana, Avellino, for my own ancestry Fantasia/Principe family from Via Cassano and Via Squillani in the ROccabascerana district. I attached the page containing the record of Domenico Pirone, born to Salvatore Pirone, aged 31, and Silvestra Minucci on 19-Feb-1889. They lived in the village of Castello. Is it possible that your great grandfather changed his name in the States? This happened with my grandparents at Ellis Island who changed their names from Eugenio to Eugene and Alovisa to Louisa. If your great grandfather was born in 1889, this was the only record of a male child born that year to your great great grandparents, Salvatore and Silvestra.

I realize that this is at least 8 years since your posting, but I thought you might like this information.

Cheers,

Phil Fantasia
