Castagna - Sarnelli Family

Post by NCJE2910 »

I need some help on finding some info on the Castagna/ Sarnelli Family.
Andrew Castagna (born during the 1890s or early 1900s in Italy) was married to Theresa Sarnelli.
The family lived in Brooklyn, New York
They had at least 2 sons Carmine (born 1932) & Louis.
Theresa's parents were: Carmine Sarnelli & Maria Fiumara
Andrew's father was Luigi Castagna (mother unknown).
I heard the Castagnas may have came to America from Ischia but Im not sure of it.
If any info at all can be found, Id appreciate it tremendously.
Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

I've located a few records that may - or may not - be your ancestors.

On the 1930 Census for Andrew, it states that he immigrated about 1905. I checked WWI registration cards for his father Luigi, and found one for a Luigi Castagno, born 10 March 1876 (sounds about right), living on West 16th St. in Brooklyn (this would be the same street as Andrew's 1930 Census). Luigi's wife's name is Mary.

I then located a 1930 Census for a Luigi and Mary Castagna on West 15th St. in Brooklyn...
Their oldest son living with them, Thomas, was born in Italy, next two children born in New York, and last two (ages 11 and 9) were born in Philadelphia about 1919 and 1921...
We know that Andrew would not be listed with his parents if the 1930 Census for Andrew and Teresa that I posted above is him. :-)
Do any of the children's names fit into your family?

Tessa, the first census is 100% correct. The following info I am slightly unsure about, I will have to ask my cousin, but many of the names sound correct. I know the name Nicholas belongs to that family. Do you have any pictures of any of the documents? This is all so wonderful. Thanks so much. Was there a 1910 census? because that shouldve listed Andrew with his parents, right?
Thanks again, and let me know if you find anythign else, and Ill let you know what my cousin says,

I'll post the images for you...

I haven't as yet found a 1910 Census, and I believe you are correct that Andrew would be listed there.

I also haven't found a manifest (there are many for the name Luigi Castagna) that I can say is possibly this family. Should be about 1904-1905

WWI Registration Card for Luigi Castagno living on West 16th Street, Brooklyn.
Wife Mary...
DOB - 10 March 1876
Working for Bklyn Rapid Transit as a laborer

1920 Census - Pennsylvania

1930 Census for Luigi/Louis Castagna and family... Brooklyn

It's interesting to note that the immiagration years are about the same on all of the above census records (1904/5 for Luigi, and 1905/6 for Mary and children)

Nick,

I know this is going to seem confusing... Could Andrew be Nicola/Nicholas?
I found a 1910 Census with Luigi and children Nicola, 8; Carmine, 6; Joseph,4; and Louisa 1-1/2 Living in Brooklyn at 2722 West 16th St.

I also found a manifest for 1905 for Maria Trano (sounds like the brother in law in the 1920 Census should be Trano and not Grano) traveling with her children Nicola Castagna and Carmine Castagna (ages 3 and 1)... they are going to her husband, Luigi Castagna at #2016 East 15th Street, Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY

Let me know what you think... :-)

Actually Tessa, it doesnt sound that crazy. Andrew actually had a grandson Andrew Nicholas - so that actually makes a lot of sense that he would be Andrew Nicholas or Nicholas Andrew as well. Wow, great observation. It definitely sounds like them. Thanks so much for pointing that out - I wouldnt of realized that. Id love to see those documents, if you could. Thanks so much Tessa, you've been amazing!

Here is the ship manifest for Maria Trano, 24, married, from Casamicciola (that is in Province of Naples, Campania Region) ---on Island of Ischia

Arriving NY 30 September 1905 on SS Madonna
Traveling with sons Nicola Castagna, 3; and Carmine Castagna, 1

They are on lines 28, 29 and 30

Image

1910 Census for Luigi and children in Brooklyn.
You will note that mother, Maria, is not listed...could be many reasons for that. We know she is not deceased since she shows up again on later censuses...

You will find Luigi and Nicola at the very bottom of the first image, and Carmine, Joseph, Louisa, and a cousin Antonio Anastasio, 33, at the top of the second image...

And here is a link to some info on Casamicciola :D

If you decide you want to get birth or marriage records for these ancestors who were from Casamicciola, you can write directly to the comune (town)...

Tessa, these documents are wonderful. Thank you so much. I guess my cousin was correct about Ischia. Thanks for the info about Casamicciola, Ill ask her if she wants to order the records. Im so glad to know the town from which they came. :)
I was trying to do some research about the Sarnellis - I found a record for when Theresa's parents came to America from Piano di Sorrento with her brother Lorenzo, but I havent been able to find anything else. Whenever, you or anyone else gets a chance, if you can find anything on them too, Id appreciate it.
Thanks a million,
Nick

If the "Joseph" in the above Censuses is familiar...his date of birth would be about 1906...

Here is a NYC Birth index listing for Brooklyn --- Maybe birth name is "Giuseppe" - Americanized to "Joseph"?

Castagna Giusepye Aug 12 1906 21888 Kings

If you wish to send for this record... small fee
You can order online here

Can you provide the ship info for Teresa's parents...you mention that you found it.
Date and name of ship would help...

NEVER MIND - found it Oct 26 1905 on Prinzess Irene...
Carmine Sarnelli 29, wife Maria Cristina Femiano(sp?) 20 and son Lorenzo 7 mos.
They are US citizens, and Lorenzo was born in US...
I'm guessing that Teresa was born soon after their arrival back in US
Living on 9th Ave in NYC.

I have found a Family Tree for this family on Ancestry... owned by 2Gail9
Do you know of this?
