Surname confusion - Yondola?

Post by pinevalleygirl »

Trying to figure out the correct spelling of an Italian Surname.
It appears different on different documents.
Yandola - is what my father-in-law believes it to be
Yandoli, Giondolo, Iandolo, Iandola

Does this sound like any name you've heard?

Thanks for your help!

Iandolo is present in 100 comuni in present day Italy, with a strong concentration in the Napoli area. The other variations are both sparsely and widely disbursed or do not exist today. This information is from the surname navigator at http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/. Do you know what comune your family is from?

John,

I am not sure. I have passports for both Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather from Napoli, but it is all in Italian and hard to read handwriting. I think the surname I was questioning must be Iandolo, Giovanna. It appears it was Americanized, either by her or someone recording her information. Then I guess it was just easier for her to tell her children it was "Yandola".

It's crazy how records got changed. When I filled out the Census records, I was sure to give complete info, and very clear. I think I may even have put on the last one that I was a Family Genealogist! In case years from now someone looks me up.

Thanks for your help.

You are most likely correct in stating it is Iandolo since had you checked ellis island you would have found 35 Iandolo surnamed immigrantsd coming into the USA at NYC with that spelling. Moreover years ago people were less knowledgeable about Italian surnames and also less sentivie about changing them to something more phonetic and Anglisized. Peter

My last name is Yandoli
Ancestors are from Avellino, Naples.
I was always told my last name really derived from Iandoli.

I guess because there is no Y in the italian alphabet. Not sure though.

I can't find anything telling me what part of Naples my husband's relatives are from. I wonder if the Surnames could have been the same at some point. I know in my family the Robibero name was spelled Robibaro and Robibbaro also. I understand this name is not common and everyone with the "Robibero" name is somehow related.

The Cianci name on the other hand seems to be very common. This is also from Naples.

Good luck in your search!

Hi Chris,
You had mentioned something in an earlier post that was very important.... that you have passports for your Great Grandparents and said it was all in Italian. I haven't seen an Italian passport... and was wondering what other information it has... you had mentioned that it was hard reading Italian handwriting. If you want me to look at it, I would like to help. I can see the confusion with the letter "I and Y"... the script upper case " I " can most definately look like the letter Y... when written in Italian. If you want - just leave me a private message.. no hard feelings if you wish not to.

Robibero has 8 towns with persons having that surname, Robibaro has 20 towns and Robibbaro has 2 towns which may overlap eachother in some instances. You will have to refine the search for the correct surname. Peter

Thanks Peter. I have also done the search which shows the Surnames in Italy. They are all relatives. Just a matter of fitting them into my tree.
