Family Linkage help

Post by Amansolillo »

Hello. My grandmother's name was Maria Uccello. She was born in 1925 to Italian immigrants Salvatore Uccello and Esther Pesaturo. My grandmother had a brother, Henry Uccello, born 1921, and a sister, Gilda Monti (nee Uccello), born 1919. My grandmother died in 1997, Gilda died in 1999, and Henry died in 2001. The only living relative that knew them well is their second (or third) cousin, whose name is Emanuela Corsetti (nee Cultrera), who was born in 1919. Emanuela's father's name was Joseph Cultrera, and his father was named that as well. Emanuela's mother died when she was young, so her first name is unknown. However, it is speculated that her mother's last name was Bagliere. Emanuela is related to my grandmother on the Cultrera side, but it is unknown if it is through the Uccello or Pesaturo side that she is related to her on. I would appreciate any thoughts, ideas, or knowledge on the linkage between Emanuela and my grandmother. Thanks

I believe that Joseph Cultrera was the brother of Joseph Bagliere's wife, being her maiden name Mary Cultrera:

Maybe that death record worths to be investigated... Do you know the exact birth date of Emanuela Cultrera?

This may have been the 1912 arrival manifest for Santa Mortillaro (possible Giuseppe Cultrera's wife)

12 november 1912

Mortillaro Santa, age 14, single, place of birth and last residence in Italy Palazzolo (Palazzolo Acreide, Siracusa province - Sicily region) leaving in Palazzolo her paternal-grandmother Angela, going to Providence RI to join her father's brother Nunzio. She was travelling with her father Salvatore age 47 and sister Itria, age 20.

Another interesting record for you from https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/MBQ9-92J/p3
:
Rhode Island Deaths and Burials, 1802-1950

Name: Vincenzo Cultrera
Gender: Male
Burial Date:
Burial Place:
Death Date: 02 Jun 1931
Death Place: Rhode Island
Age: 47
Birth Date: 1884
Birthplace:
Occupation:
Race:
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Francesca Altamonti Cultrera
Father's Name: Paolo Cutrera
Father's Birthplace:
Mother's Name: Emanuela Uccelli Cultrera
Mother's Birthplace:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: B03102-0
System Origin: Rhode Island-EASy
Source Film Number: 1941305
Reference Number: 31-229

Vincenzo Cultrera was Giuseppe's brother, I found this 1911 arrival manifest for him on Ancestry.com:

Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943

Name: Vincenzo Cultrera
Arrival Date: 25 Apr 1911
Age: 27
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1884
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Romanic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Guiseppe Cultrera
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Caccocattino, Italy

I'm unable now to post the manifest image for you, however Vincenzo was 27 years old, stated that he was leaving in Messina - Sicily, his father Paolo and that he was going to River Buck??? (can't decipher well this place) RI to join his brother Giuseppe Cultrera
He was travelling with his wife Francesca Altomonte, age 19.
Place of birth for Vincenzo and Francesca is Canicattini.

So, if these are the correct persons then Giuseppe Cultrera's mother maiden name was Emanuela Uccelli, this may explain the relation with your Uccelli's side...

Laura

P.S. Consider also that Emanuela Cultraro was the first child born to Giuseppe and was named after her paternal grandmother :D

Was Sebastiano Uccello Salvatore's brother? If he was, from this death record you can see the his father's first name was Giuseppe Uccello:

Rhode Island Deaths and Burials, 1802-1950

Name: Sabastiano Uccello
Gender: Male
Burial Date:
Burial Place:
Death Date: 13 Mar 1919
Death Place: Providence, Providence, Rhode Island
Age: 29
Birth Date: 1890
Birthplace:
Occupation:
Race:
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Guiri Josephina Ruzzo
Father's Name: Guiseppi Uccello
Father's Birthplace:
Mother's Name: Savda :?:
Mother's Birthplace:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I01191-5
System Origin: Rhode Island-EASy
Source Film Number: 2024077
Reference Number: 24

Possible Giuseppe's mother Emanuela Uccello was Sebastiano's father's sister? and they were first cousins?

I really appreciate all of this information

A cousin of mine says that he's not sure if Salvatore brought any brothers or sisters with him to America. Accordingly, Salvatore had three brothers and five sisters. The year of birth from the census that you posted matches Salvatore's, 1887. In a cemetery in Canicattini Bagni, the area of Sicily where my great-grandfather came from, there are a few Uccellos who look like they could be his brothers, two of which being a Vincenzo and Sebastiano Uccello. If that Salvatore from the record is indeed my great-grandfather, then that would mean those brothers were the Vincenzo and Sebastiano who are now buried in Sicily. Perhaps they returned back to Italy?

Anyway, the Emanuela Uccello listed is most likely the 1st cousin of Salvatore Uccello's father.

Yes, it's possible ... I noticed that there were several Sebastiano and Vincenzo Uccello on the Ellisisland.org website, looks like they were pretty common first and last names in Canicattini...

I just found this 1907 arrival manifest for a Sebastiano Uccello travelling with a Giuseppe Cultrera:

1 september 1907:

Uccello Sebastiano, age 17 (approx. birth year 1890) single from Canicattini (leaving there his father Giuseppe) to Rhode Island to join his brother Uccello Salvatore
He was travelling with Giuseppe Cultrera, age 18 (approx. birth year 1889), single, from Canicattini (leaving there his father Paolo) going to meet his cousin Salvatore Uccello.

Through this, we can assume that Emanuela Uccello was the sister of Salvatore, Sebastiano, and Vincenzo's father. It is very much likely that the Sebastiano and Vincenzo mentioned are my great-grandfather's brothers, as I found a death record for Sebastiano stating he died in Providence, which is where Salvatore lived, and his parents were Giuseppe and Savda(?). The first child of my great-grandparent's was a son they named Giuseppe, but he died in his infancy. That gives further credence to Giuseppe and Savda being Salvatore's parents
