First of all you do not explain very much which makes life difficult. The least you could do is to furnish any additional information however insignificant to you but important to find your family. Now Bologna and Genevoa as you know are cities but they are also Prfovincial capital which means that many towns and villages are in the province of Bologna and Geneova so even if we find persons there with that surname you miught also find persons with that same surname in the provinces as well. Go to www.paginebianche.it and insert the name Leoni (do the same later for Girotti) in the first line and BO for the city of Bologna and the province of Bologna. Do the same for Girotti but put the initials for GE for the city of Genova and the province of Genova. Peter

Peter,

Thank you so much for that link. I never came across that white page
For Italy. The one I was using is different. This one seems better.
I was also using Yahoo Italia for my searches. I will get more info
Tonight from my Mom. I’m in NC & she lives in Canada.

I’m new at this, as most might be. I really didn’t know what to
Expect when I posted. I really don’t know what to supply. So
Far though, I’m glad you replied. I read earlier that this site
Might offer a service to find out your family tree. Are you involved with it?
Thank you again.

E Leoni.

Not to worry... If you wish to know about Italian genealogy I can recommend a book. Italian genealogical record by Trafford R. Cole which is an easy read and great reference for noww and the future. If you just want to know about your family then I can get you there faster than the speed of DARK! We work backwards.Peter

Well Peter thank you.
The speed of DARK ! Ha, that is funny.

Yes I’d like to find out more about my family.
How far back can one go? Ie: 1800, or 1500’s?
How does one get started?

E Leoni.
ps: Oh and by the way I just ordered the book. Thank you for
telling me about it.

You start from your earl;iest ancestor from Italy working backward which is the cardinal rule. If you know the town of origin your home! Depending on either www. ellisisland.org which is where the bulk of immigrants came into the USA at NYC or NARA (USA national archives) for all other ports like Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New orleans and San Francisco. From the ships manifest you can obtain vital data as to age, birthand place. From there you either go thru microfilm at Family History center of Mormon church or go straight to municipal hall in town of origin. Most southern Italian towns go back to 1809 for civil records all others vary usually from time of Italy unifciation 1879. Anything earlier than 1809 is church (council of Trent 16th engtury obliging churches to keep records and prior to that Kings, Barons, Thieves and assorted rascals. Peter

I forgot to mention, I'm an immigrant myself. We arrived in Canada
in the late sixties. I was seven years old.

Amazon just sent me an email
saying they shipped the book. I'll be reading the book this weekend.
Then I’ll more than likely ask more questions.

Enrico.
