Antoscio/Martignetti/Mauriello

Post by Addamo »

Hi! I found on the CA death index that Angela Martignetti (husband's grandmother) mother's maiden name was Antoscio. I have been unable to get a hit on that surname on Ancestry or this site. I have requested the death certificate to make sure the translation was correct. Angela Martignetti was born 27 Jun 1889 in Avellino. She married Giuseppe Mauriello in Montefalcione 23 Mar 1914. They had a son (Dominic) born in Montefalcione, then moved to Boston in 1916. Giuseppe Mauriello was born in Montefalcione 1 Dec 1890. I would love to have more info on the parents of Angela and Giuseppe. Has anyone seen the Antoscio surname? Does anyone know this family in Italy? Both Angela and Giuseppe died in CA, 1958 and 1970 respectively. I'm more interested in the families they left behind in Italy. Thank you for your time.

There are currently 5 listings in the Italian Phone Book for MAURIELLO in Montefalcione :-)

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... cione&ind=

And 24 listings for MARTIGNETTI

http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... tefalcione

I don't find any listings for ANTOSCIO :-(

The name ANTOSCIA is found in Caserta Province (but not a common name), maybe that is the spelling?

Perhaps you could write and inquire about relatives?

Here are other resources for civil registration documents (births, marriages, deaths) to learn of the surname of Martignetti's mother...

Your local LDS Family History Center has available the microfilmed records of Montefalcione from 1809-1899.
http://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhl ... +Montefalc++

You can rent and view at your nearest FHC - put in your zip code at this site to find the nearest one...
http://familysearch.org/eng/

***AND/OR****

You can write directly to the Comune (town) of Montefalcione to request the marriage record for Angela and Giuseppe. This will give you the name of Angela's parents, and her exact place of birth... The marriage would have taken place in Angela's "hometown" but should be recorded in Montefalcione because it is the home of the groom.

Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Via Cardinale dell'Olio, 7

I'm not sure about the spelling, I will know more when I receive the actual death certificates from CA. Antoscia sounds promising. I find it interesting it's an uncommon surname. I will definitely use the help with the letters link. Thanks for passing that on. Hopefully when the letters are received the families won't be overly suspicious and ignore them. Times are kind of scarey right now.

I believe the marriage mostly likely took place where Angelina was born as well, but my husband's mother always said they were married in Montefalcione. It makes me wonder if Angelina was not also born there. There were so many Martignetti's living there, I believe more than Mauriello's. Thank you all for your input! :)

Oh my, you have no idea how happy you have made me. :D I had already found the two immigration documents for Giuseppe, however when his daughters were asked if they knew about an Uncle named Antonio or a Aunt named Carmela, none had heard of them. I was certain they were Giuseppe's siblings, however, the fact his children never heard of them confused me. It's amazing you found the marriage records so quickly. May I ask how and where you got the information? I would love to print copies for my records. I still can't believe how much information you have given me. My husband, Frank Addamo, and I plan on taking a trip to Italy next year. We don't plan on doing the tourist trip, but to go to the places of his ancestors. Obviously, we will be going to Montefalcione and then the place of his paternal grandfather, St. Margherita, Belice Sicily. I would love suggestions from people on places to stay and how best to navigate this trip. I still can't believe you gave me my husband's maternal grandparents! It's a dream come true. I hope this will make searching for the cemetery where they are buried easier as well as discovering who their parents were. The name Antonio was not used by Giuseppe or any of Giuseppe's children to name their children, but I still wonder if Giuseppe's and Antonio's grandfather could have been Antonio.... The names of Concetta and Carmela (my husband's mother) were passed down. Well I guess I have rambled on too much, I am almost giddy with all this new information. THANK YOU SO MUCH! :D :D

Hi Tessa 78 and Suanj, I just received the death certificates of Angela and Joseph (Giuseppe) Mauriello. The death certificate for Angela states that her mother's name was Nancy Antoscia and her father Patrick Martignetti. Joseph her husband would have been the person who gave the information at the time of her death. I don't know if the spelling Iantosca is a form of the same name, but Antoscia is what is on the dc. It's also a typed document and not handwritten. I am uploading the section of the immigration form (page 2) where it asks the person where they were born. I can't tell what the first letter is (actually the whole word). I've tried different variations of what I think it could be and nothing comes on a search. So, I hope you can readily identify what she told them at the time of her immigration as to where she was born. I cropped the document to the specific line (#11), so I hope it can be read and not too small. It's the bottom last word at the end of the line. I think is says Montefalcione above it. Thank you so much for your time.

I read:
-father Mauriello Giuseppe, 92 Salem st
-birthplace is: line above: Montefalcione, and below: Taurasi
(Avellino province)...

however in Montefalcione is popular IANTOSCA surname; in all Avellino province nobody Antoscia by phone directory...

Well, I would have never guessed Taurasi--ever! Thank you so much. I've completed the form to request Giuseppe and Angela's marriage license. So, I guess that will resolve the issue of the name. I suspect you are correct, but I need to be sure. I hope I have better luck in getting records from Montefalcione, than I did from Sicily. I never heard back when I made a request from that area... :|

I know this is years since the post has been created, but this is an amazing find. I've been looking all over for different information while constructing my own family tree. Giuseppe (Joseph) and Angela are my Great-grandparents; however, due to unfortunate circumstances I have always been somewhat disconnected from my Mauriello side. Being able to find all these names, years, and places makes me feel like I am able to be apart and learn about my Italian heritage.
