Spadafora of Calabria

Post by jc4490 »

Hello,

I am searching for information on Francesco Spadafora and wife "Margaret" Martino. All I have is names, as were written on their son, Pasquale Spadafora (b. 25 Jan 1874 in Italy d. 25 Feb 1930 in WV)'s death certificate. I am reasonably sure that they were from somewhere in Calabria, and s search of surname frequency confirms that. I do not know if they came to America. I am interested in knowing more about them, whether they had any other children, which of them came to America, etc. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Living in Gypsy(?) Harrison, West Virginia

BUT - could you tell us when he immigrated? Maybe his place of birth is on the manifest...

the WWI draft registration card found by Tessa is correct; he was born on 5 dec 1875( or 1874) by military record...
and I believe that this could be the arrival:

Tessa, I believe that is my Patsy, but I'm not sure why the birthday is 5 Dec 1875... Like suanj said, maybe that is some kind of error? Although it's a strangely specific error... But thank you for that image! I'm saving it on my computer.

suanj, yes, that is the correct arrival and census record. The daughter Maria Rosa was about 3 years old when they immigrated. That's my great-grandmother. I was telling my mom how lucky it seemed because I don't think little children like that handled the boat ride well... I'm sure many died... But, she was a strong woman. She told my mom's dad and uncles when they were young that they had to serve in the military because she came to this country with nothing and obviously she was very grateful. And all 8 of her sons served if I remember correctly...

Anyway, I thank you both for your help. I just wish I could learn more than just the names of his parents.

Also, on the ship manifest image, in the column for "who you are going to meet" it says brother but I can't make out the name or names. Could someone take a look? It looks like the first could be Biagio, but I'm not sure on the second or if its even a name...

The name on the manifest looks like Saverio Bianfori/Bianfosi... can't make out the address...

As for learning more about Pasquale's parents, you can write directly to San Giovanni in Fiore to request his birth record. This will have names of his parents and usually their age and place of birth. You can work backwards in time with this information.

Write to:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Via Gaspare Oliverio
87055 San Giovanni In Fiore (CS)
ITALY

Write your request in Italian..

Hi Tessa, I believe that Saverio Biafora is the relative of name in line 12 and not line 13 (Pasquale Spadafora); if I read well seeming to me "brother ( maybe brother in law) Burgo G.nni( =Giovanni Burgo)" but maybe I can be wrong...

Jeremy, Tessa and Suanj, :D
Another source for research would be to visit a Family History Center near you.
https://familysearch.org/locations
There should be much to learn about the Spadafora family looking at the following civil records on film and available to rent. http://tinyurl.com/c7sejqm

Hi, So happy to have found this information.

My grandmother was Angeline Spadafore Rose, which would have made Pasquale my great-grandfather. My paternal grandparents adopted me at an early age and I only remember seeing the Spadafore family a few times before starting school, and for some reason never seen them again. Recently I've decided to do some family research and find the information here very interesting. Would love hearing from you.

Hello everyone. Im trying to find info on my family but don't know where to start. Everytime I search this forum comes up so here I am. My great grandfathers name is Pasquale Spadafora born in san giovani Italy in 1892. My great grandmothers name is Giovanna. Pasquale mothers name is Teresa and his father is Antonio.
Pasquale was a POW in Bombay and never made it back to Italy. I know he taken to Australia on the ship Mariposa. From there I have nothing so I would love to know what happened to him as we think he may have remarried and migrated to America. Thanks any info would be greatly appreciated.

Angeline: My great-grandparents were Pasquale and Rosa Spadafore from Calabria and they settled in Shinnston, WV. My grandmother was one of their daughters, Mary Rose. She had a sister Angeline or Angel. I cannot find much info about Angel other than she married a Frank Rose or Russo. Do you have any info on her, any children? Angel would've been my dad's aunt...my dad was Frank J. Pulice of Shinnston, WV. Hope to hear from you soon.
