Peraine - is what other Italian surname?

Post by maria280 »

I am searching for Domenico Peraine who came from Italy to the U.S. in the early 1900s. I believe he was born in 1885. I don't know what town he came from in Italy. He married Giuseppa Andreoni, but I don't know if that was before or after he immigrated. As a couple they settled in Camden, New Jersey.

The Peraine surname has been spelled many different ways on their American documents and within their family: Peraini, Peraine, Perrine, Perraine

I cannot find a good match on the Ellis Island manifests for any of these, although I have located the following which don't seem to match:
Arrival Aug. 1907 - Domenico Perinni
Arrival March 1907 - Domenico Perrino
Arrival Dec. 1909 - Domenico Peranni

Is there another spelling of this surname (Peraine) that would be more correct to the original Italian surname?

Thanks.

Hello Maria :-)

Though it is VERY SCARCE... the spelling PERAINE is found in northern Italy today in the Lombardia Region. Do you know if your ancestor came from north or south?

Another name that is similar is PEIRONE - also in the north.

Hi T.,
Thank you for your suggestions.
Yes, I believe he was from the North. I was told he was very fair with blond hair and blue eyes.

Hi Maria,

Here is a POSSIBLE manifest for Giuseppa Andreoni (though she is crossed out - but written above her name - very light ink - looks like "landed in Phila."

She is leaving her father Luigi in Montorio and is heading to Camden, NJ, to her sister at 1729 Master(?) St.

Age is 22 - which would make her date of birth about 1891, and she is SINGLE.

Here is the listing for PHILADELPHIA Passenger Lists on the same date and ship :-)

Line 1 - Giuseppina Andreoni, 22, leaving father Luigi in MONTECCHIO, going to sister ANNINA ANDREONI in Camden, NJ.

IF...this is your Giuseppa - you may want to contact City of Camden for marriage record.

Hi T.,
This is indeed the Giuseppina Andreoni that I am looking for!
I agree that Camden, NJ records are the next best step to trying to find Domenico, through Giuseppina.
Thanks for your help.

According to the above census, Giuseppa (Josephine) immigrated in 1914 and Domenico in 1906 :-)

Thanks T. and Suanj!
Yes - this is him (Payo). I too located the 1920 census last night as Suanj's find had given me the street address for him. I also located the 1930 census in which there is another! spelling of the last name. This time as Piria(n,v or ?). The handwriting is difficult to read.

The 1930 census lists his immigration as 1914 but I think this is just mixed up with his wife's date.

I still cannot locate the arrival from Italy, either in 1906 or 1914.

Source: Year: 1930; Census Place: Camden, Camden, New Jersey; Roll: 1321; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 36; Image: 244.0.

thanks for your help.

Hi, I see by 1920 census( great find Tessa! ) that the oldest daughter was Luisa; by italian naming tradition, if Domenico followed it, Luisa first name could be the first name of Domenico mother....
yesterday I found a possible immigration record, but I no posted it, because I was and I am unsure, but , frankly, it is the only possible record..
by Dominik Piran (.... surname spell??) WWI draft registration card, he had blue eyes...

I found some possible trip( I know not if the records are abt 2 different persons with same name and same birthplace or just it is the same person, but the age is wrong on some ship's manifest):
1906

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Domenico Pierini

Port of arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Italia
single, final destination Trenton, NJ

1909
First Name: Domenico
Last Name: Pierini

Ethnicity: Italy, Italian North
Last Place of Residence: Acquacamina, Mansato (Acquacanina, Macerata)

Gender: Male

1913

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Domenico Pierini
Name: Domenico Pierini
Arrival Date: 2 Aug 1913
Birth Year: abt 1882
Birth Location: Italy
Birth Location Other: acquacanina
Age: 31
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of departure: Naples, Italy
Port of arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: San Giovanni

pag 1 Image
mother Luisa in Acquacanina

pag 2 Image
final destination Trenton NJ

it are some discrepancies on the ship's manifests, so I cannot say if is 1 Domenico Pierini or 2 Domenico Pierini (different persons), but I am a bit positive that is the same person and the ship's manifests are no very accurate...

I searched so much, and, frankly, this is the better option; also because Giuseppina Andreoni coming from Montecchio, and in Italy are some commune with this name and also some hamlet; one( hamlet) is in Force Commune, Marche region, no far from Acquacanina
