Panico Family from Pomarico, Basicilcata, Italy

Post by Help » 12 Feb 2012, 18:24

My great grandmother was Maria Michelo Panico born about 1853 in Pomarico, Basilicata, Italy. Her husband was Nicodemo Scandiffio (1841-1905). Maria went to New York in 1908 & I believe stayed there until her death but do not know when or where she died. I would like to know who her parents were & if there are any descendants from this line still living in Pomarico.

I noticed that at the time of her 1908 arrival in NYC Maria Michela Panico stated that she was joining her sons Francesco and Vito while she was leaving in Italy her son Girolamo...
But I found another possible son, Nicola...

11 may 1902

Scandiffia Nicola, age 20, single, shoemaker, from Pomarico to Providence RI to join his brother Francesco (I found evidence that Frank's son Mario was born in RI while the other children were born in NY):

Then Nicola went back to Italy , this is his second arrival :

14 march 1905

Scandiffio Nicolo, age 23, single, shoemaker, from Potenza to NY to join his brother Francesco in NYC. ... &line=0026

Nicolo Scandiffio married Annantonia Lauria on October 1905 in NY:

Then there is this 1922 arrival manifest for Nicola:

1 october 1922

Scandiffio Nicola, age 41, married, shoermaker, place of birth and last residence in Italy Pomarico, leaving in Pomarico his wife Anna, going to New York to join his brother Vito living on 1231 Stebbins Avenue. Already in the U.S. from 1902 to 1913

So, is it possible that also Maria Michela Panico went back to Italy with Nicola, his wife and children?

Hi Laura,

I did have some of this information, but not the maiden name of Nicola Scandiffio's wife nor the date they married, so I thank you very much for that. Thank you also for the 1910 census, I never would have found it under the name "Ocandilas"! I guess it is possible that my great grandmother Maria Michela Panico Scandiffio returned to Italy in 1922 with his wife & children.
