Unknown occupation

Post by ajcris13 »

One of my relatives lists his career as "Portiere di Vicaria" The location is Napoli in the 1780's. I believe that Vicaria is one of the districts of Napoli. I have no idea what this occupation could be and was wondering if anyone could help me.

Thanks

Yes, Vicaria is one of the districts of Napoli, but I think Vicaria also had other meanings, that now are lost.
For instance, the "Gran Corte della Vicaria" was a Court in Naples, he may have been a clerk in it.
I also found some references in Google Books to "portiere di Vicaria" as a specifici job, but there was no explanation of it.

In eighteen century Naples Vicaria Civile and Vicaria Criminale were two courts of justice.
If I understand rightly the reference in google books that Pippo found, a "portiere" was a lesser official charged of carrying legal documents
