What is the Meaning of POSTHUMA?

Post by trevisan2 »

What is the meaning of the word POSTHUMIA in the following birth act?

Maria figlia POSTHUMA del qm ms Zuanne Biasotto qm Gio: Batta.

Also, When I see Gio: Batta, Should I write the first name as Giovanni?

I have extracted thousands of Italian church entries, and I always use Giovanni Battista if Joannes Bttsta. is written or Joanns. Bttsa. The main reason being, that a man named Giovanni Battista at birth almost never went by simply Giovanni in life.

In fact are:

Maria figlia POSTHUMA del qm ms Zuanne Biasotto qm Gio: Batta
Maria daughter postuma (born after an death) of qm=quod mortem = that are died ms(???) Zuanne ( Veneto dialect name of Giovanni italian first name) Biasotto qm=quod mortem (ditto) Gio. Batta ( diminutive of Giovanni Battista)

Re: OK so lets see if I understand?

I have extracted over 15000 names in another parish and never saw the word Posthuma. I also understand that words used change from Priest to Priest.

As for Gio: Batta or the word Batta, I understand they are short words of the names. But the questions is ( is it more correct to ) write their name out when extracting as Giovanni Battista or or Giovanni Batta.
These are the name of the Parents.

There are others as well Isabetta, seems to interchange with Elisabetta.

Does ths mean that Isabetta is always Elisabetta.

No, not change from priest to priest, postuma is an simply italian word... perhaps are mistaken, but not changed... and perhaps all relatives was living when the child was born...

Gio. Batta= Giovanni Battista sure is an short form, but in the years this diminutive become first name all effects... so becoming GIOBATTA... are just write Gio.Batta and not Gio:Batta;
