Pietro Marotta Born in 1870 in the Naples Area

Post by FMMarotta »

I am trying to find family history for my grandfather Pietro Marotta. He was born in 1870 in the Naples area. He arrived at Ellis Island in the late 1890's or early 1900's and had relatives in Amsterdam, New York. He eventually resided in Rotterdam Junction and died in Feb.1956. I have no information on his parents or any of his family members in Italy during the late 1800's. I believe that he was in the military while living in Italy. His wife was Giovannina Marotta, her maiden name was Sangiovanni. While married she was called Jenni. I believe she had a brother named Stephen St.John. Again, I have no information on her family in Italy.

Thank you for any help that you can provide.

Welcome to the forum, Frank!

According to this arrival manifest from 1931 for Giovannina Sangiovanni Marotta, she was leaving her son Luigi Marotta, in CAIAZZO, which she also lists as HER last place of residence. She was going to her husand Pietro Marotta in Rotterdam, NY. This was probably a visit back to Italy...

This will give us a start as to where to look in Italy! :-)

Here is a POSSIBLE arrival manifest for Pietro Marotta in 1900
He is age 28, and he is going to his cousin Vincenzo Marotta in Amsterdam, NY
Pietro lists his last place of residence as Castel Campagnano, which actually borders the comune of Caiazzo :-) Both of these towns are about 40 km NE of Naples.
You might also note the others from the same town traveling to Amsterdam, on the lines above and below Pietro. He also indicates that he was in the US before in 1887...

Hugs to you, suanj! :-)

You connected the Castel Campagnano town with the Caiazzo town in the marriage act!
AND... your arrival manifest of 1907 matches the date listed on the 1920 US Census for her immigration.

Teamwork!

Tessa78, Suanj, Adelfio:

Thank you very much for your help. It seems that I now have information that I never had before on my Grandfather (Pietro Marotta) and Great Grandfather (Pasquale Marotta). Do any of you have any information on whether Pietro had any other siblings in Italy and is there a date for of his marriage to Giovannina, my grandmother?

Again, many thanks.
