general genealogy question

Post by tmajor »

sorry this isn't related to italian genealogy, but how do i go about obtaining a copy of a birth certificate for someone in the states? i just today found my gggrandfather's birthdate on a census and want to get his birth certificate to find out his parents names. I have the year and month (actually, could be one of two years, writing is kinda messy), but just don't know exactly where to look or do i just send off a letter to the county he was born in? thanks for all the help! this site is so wonderful!

Hi Trisha,

Every state has its own laws regarding vital records and when they required them. Varies widely. I usually use google or Cindy's list to search for the requirements of the state. You can also check the LDS site to see if the records you want are available on microfilm.

www.usgenweb.org is another good place to start learning what help is available in the area that you are researching. Good luck in your ancestor hunt!

Let us have the name of your ggggrandfather and the census you found listing him. We might be able to help with the names of his parents...doesn't hurt to have another pair of eyes see what they can find!

Let us know.....

Oh, thank you! His name is Walter Amol Franks. I found him on the 1900 census in Peoria County, Illinois. On there is said he was born in June (or maybe January?) of 1879. His wife was Nellie and daughter Elsey (whose name we thought was Elta).Occupation was barber. His son that was my ggrandfather was on the 1920 census. Orville J. Franks. Was a private in the military in Germany and was 19 years old. I hope this information helps. I'm getting ready to send off a letter to Peoria County later this week to see if I can get a birth certificate, too.

Thanks again,
Trisha

Here are two websites which you may or may not have seen,
one is a searchable database for Illinois, and the other has
a variety of info as well as available data all dealing with Illinois.

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/depar ... dings.html

http://www.iltrails.org/ilrehelp.htm

The Peoria Genealogical Society also has good info and will perform
searches for a ten dollar fee.

hope this helps.......
