Locating family lineage in Sicily.

Post by momcain »

I am trying to locate Guarino family members in Sicily, Italy. My grandmother's name was Maria Guarino but was born in the US in Philadelphia. My great-grandmother was (I believe) Maria DeSimone Guarino and my great grandfather, Salvatore Guarino were from Sicily, Italy. I am hoping to try and locate family in Sicily as I will be traveling there for the first time this summer. My grandmother had sibilings - Josephine Guarino, Mary Guarino, Margaret Guarino, Charles Guarino, Joseph Guarino (I believe that all of the siblings were born in the US)

We will need to determine the exact town of birth in Sicily :-)

Can you provide a few more details?
Grandmother's date of birth in US?

Approximate year of birth of her father? her mother?
Were her parents married in USA or Italy?

When did they immigrate (approximately)? and did they settle in Philadelphia?

EDITED TO ADD:

Great find, Marty :D

Two good possbilities for birthplace...

Sant'Anna, comune of Mascali, Catania, Sicily
Sant'Anna, comune of Caltabellotta, Agrigento, Sicily

Here is the marriage record for Salvatore Guarino's parents, Pietro Guarino and Maria Coco. Pietro and Maria's birth records are also indexed on FamilySearch. He was born in Nov 1855 and she in Jan 1855.

Name: Pietro Guarino
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 18 Nov 1855
Christening Place: Parish of Sant' Anna
Birth Date: 15 Nov 1855
Birthplace: Sant'Anna, Sciacca, Agrigento, Italy
Father's Name: Salvadore Guarino
Father's Age: 36y
Mother's Name: Maria Abbruzzo
Mother's Age: 30y

Name: Maria Coco
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 20 Jan 1855
Christening Place: Parish of Sant' Anna
Birth Date: 18 Jan 1855
Birthplace: Sant'Anna, Sciacca, Agrigento, Italy
Father's Name: Giuseppe Coco
Father's Age: 40y
Mother's Name: Giuseppa La Ciura
Mother's Age: 40y

Sant'Anna is currently a frazione of Caltabellotta, but in the 19th c. it was a separate comune, albeit a tiny one. It was in the district of Sciacca in the province of Agrigento.

Steve, could you give us any more information about your ancestors? Your father's given name? Your grandparents' names? When anyone was born, even approximately? Which generation came to America?

Guarino is a common name throughout Italy, but especially in Campania. There are a lot in Sicily, too, especially Palermo province, and in southern Basilicata and in Taranto in Puglia, as well as up north in western Lombardy, although I can't whether the name was as common there in the 19th c.

I am looking for information of me great grandmother. Her maiden name was Maria DeSimone born in 1880 in Agrigento, Sicily. She married Salvatore Guarino, also from Italy. I was hoping to find out if she married in Italy or US. I also looking for the names of her parents and grandparents.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

It really sounds like the same person. It was common for US records to have anglicizations and misspellings of Italian names. I see that 1906 entry in the indexes online from the Italian Genealogical Group, but unfortunately I can't find it on FamilySearch.org, where there would be a transcript of the full record, including the parents' names.

Where did Salvatore and Maria live in the US?

"New York, New York City Births, 1846-1909," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WZ2-4NC : 20 March 2015), Francesco Guarino, 19 Apr 1908; citing Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, reference 14079 New York Municipal Archives, New York; FHL microfilm 1,993,078.

Note that they were living in Brooklyn in 1908, before they moved to Philly, so it would be consistent with them having married in Brooklyn in 1906. However, according to the naturalization record above Salvatore's son Pietro was born in Italy in 1903. Perhaps that son was from a first marriage, as in the arrival record of Salvatore from 1902 he is listed as married. The mother's surname in the birth record was Di Simone, which was either misspelled or miss-transcribed as "Disimani." Di Simone and De Simone are 2 different ways of spelling the same name. In Italy now De Simone is much more common but in Agrigento province Di Simone predominates. I'm not so sure that she was from Agrigento, though, as the name is more frequently found in nearby Palermo and Trapani provinces.
