ellis island ---text

i am wondering if my computer is acting up or has ellis island added another block?

in the past i was able to print the text version of the ship manifest. i tried to do that today but was unable to do so. when the data comes up on the screen much of the content is to the right on the screen. it can be moved left, however when you attempt to make a copy all that is printed is the number and the first two letters.

is this ellis island blocking or my computer???????

Yes... it also happens to me and I am on a Mac... I will write to a very special person and see if he can suggest something...

I use both Safari and Internet Explorer... each one works differently with websites... but the problem exists using both browsers...

If I hear anything I will post... Nice to see you back at the forum...

I have also had the same problem. I tried sending Ellis Island an e-mail, but have gotten no response. I also thought it was my computer until I talked to mfjp.

Dr. Stephen Morse (the originator of the One-Step Search Tools) sent me the following, also mentioned to post his reply here at the forum... what a nice guy! He answered right away too...

I found it to be just a minor inconvenience when viewing the screen, since I never actually print out text versions of the manifests. But now that you mention it, I realize that this error on their part will make it impossible to print out the text version.

But if you really want to print it out, that's easy. All you need to do
is make a local copy of the page and extract the table. The steps would
be as follows:

1. From the view menu, select SOURCE. That will open up the source in
Notepad
2. Using notepad, make the following correction to the source file:
- search for the string "Manifests often extend"
- look back about ten lines and you'll see a line that starts with
"<table"
- delete everything in the file preceding that "<table"
- in the remaining file search for the first "</table>"
- delete everything following it

3. From Notepad save that source as a local file on your computer
4. Bring up that local file using your browser.

At this point the table should display fine at the left side of the
screen so it can be printed.

maria could i impose on you. i really don't savvy the steps to access the text manifest. i would appreciate if you spell out the steps in the simplest of terms. as it now stands i'm lost.

i asked could you break down the procedure by dr. morse in the simpliest of terms. i am not able to get by his first line. by now you know i'm not to swift with computer jargon.
