In his book, Our Italian Surnames, Prof Joseph G Fucilla refers to the surname "Pietromonaco" as a compound surname. As such, it is made up of two parts-the first part is the first name Pietro and the second part is the word, monaco, which means "monk." So literally the name means "Peter, the monk." According to him, this surname is apt to be Southern Italian.
