Campolo

Post by camwal » 26 Mar 2015, 21:52

I'm pretty sure that my grandfather was born in Chorio. His father's name was Francesco and his mother's name was Angela Gurnari. Does anyone have any information about this family? I think they might have moved around a bit. There don't seem to have been many Campolos in this area.
Many thanks for any/all responses!

Are you sure about the spelling of Chorio? There's no such location in Italy...

I appears that the village of Chorio belongs to the town of San Lorenzo in RC
It presently has a population of only about 324 residents...

Here are links to VERY limited online records for Chorio :-)

I see. Chorio is now a hamlet(frazione) of San Lorenzo.
In Italian the group of letters "ch", as well as "gh", is always followed by the vowel "e" or "i", never bay "a" or "o" or "u".

Perhaps of Greek origins?
Looks like there is an accent over the "o" - Choriò and possibly an alternate? name - Roghudi. OR - is that another/different village?

Here is what is on WIKI about this place...

Hi,
I am helping a friend with her family tree and there is a connection.
Her 2x's great grandfather, Antonino and Francesco were brothers.
Do you have a tree on ancestry.com ?

Thanks,
Joann

I have nothing to add to what is written above because camwal can find what he needs in the also above nominated websites http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it, http://www.archiviareagrecanica.it/ and http://www.benvanrijswijk.com/fontigenealogiche.htm .
But just for the case someone is interested: According to Gerhardt Rohlfs the name Ghorio is from ancient Greek (we are here in the middle of the Area Grecanica) and means zone, area, but also farm or estate. Chorio di San Lorenzo at first was a hamlet of Pentidattilo as it appears in the Catasto Onciario of Pentidattilo of 1759. When the Civil State begins in 1809 it was a "sottocommune" of San Lorenzo.
There are two other Chorio's but they are written as in Greek "Ghorio". Ghorio di Roghudi and Ghorio di Roccaforte but throughout the area it is a very common toponym which appears f.e. in Bova and Palizzi.
