Help with names on baptismal records

Post by Pontiusmaximus » 10 Aug 2016, 22:44

I get somewhat confused in matching baptismal records to an individual that I have, say a marriage or a death record for. I'm sure this has all to do with a 'baptismal name' but which name is the child's given name. For an example, given the name on a baptismal record of Francesco Paolo Marius Furnari, which will be the name by which he is called and will be carried on thru his marriage and death?

Francesco would be the given name.

The civil record might also have the additional names (second and third names) which would be Paolo Mario.
