My last name is Baggia which most of my Italian friends say is a northern Italian name (Turin/Milan area). However, here is the kicker, my great grand parents were from Surat in India. So for the past 100+ years we are basically from Indian descent. Surat used to be part of the silk route and was the main port and trading city in colonial day. I've been trying to track how did our family gain an Italian family name and working our way backwards to see if any Baggia from Italy came to India for business and settled there.
Any suggestions on how to tackle this task would be greatly appreciated!
