re: emigrant return passenger lists

is there anyone out ther aware of any databases or records regarding searches for emigrants who may have returned to italy and are not found in the us passport applications records? kind of a reverse passenger list database for these emigrants who returned to either visit or stay. i'm researching a death record for an ancestor who was a resident of massachusetts but also had family in new york. he would have died between 1910 and 1940. but i've checked death records in both states thoroughly for this time period and found nothing. the only other possibility is that,even though a naturalized citizen,he may have returned for a visit and died there.as he may not have needed a passport theres no way to know if he made such a trip other than some kind of reverse passenger record. most likely not but trying all possibilities. any help would be most appreciated.
