Different Professions on Different Records

Post by datxcali »

Hey all.

I've been trying to figure out the profession of this man: Gaetano Prestopino.

I have found three documents of his:

1) In the marriage record of his daughter, Domenica, in 1821, his profession is listed as "Pavonasso" (?).

2) In the marriage record of his son, Gregorio, in 1822, his profession is listed as "Cattattore" (the closest thing I could find to this is "Cantatore", which means he was a singer).

Interestingly, both Gaetano and Gregorio are listed with the "Don" honorific here (whereas there was no honorific just a year before).

3) In Gaetano's death record in 1838, his profession appears to be listed as "proprietario" (landowner) and he is, again, listed with the "Don" honorific. His wife (for the first time), father, and mother also have this honorific.

Any idea on how to interpret the differences in these records?

"Cattatore" would be an old term for business broker.

It's unlikely that a singer would be called "Don" and have lands.

Thanks for the response!

haha that's what I was thinking. Also, I'm not sure southern Italy in the early 1800s, in the midst of poverty, had much demand for singers. :D

Do you have any resources to translate old Italian words like that? None of the resources that I've been able to find have that profession (or many of the others that I've been finding).

I'm thinking that Gaetano's occupation in the 1822 marriage record might be Collettore - Collector.

Happy to help. :)

With the 1821 record I don't think the word there is "Pavonasso". I'm thinking that the occupation starts with an "S" and I'm wondering whether it might be "Sacconazzo" - I'm not even sure if this is a word - although it could be dilect. Anyway, if it is a word, it might mean "maker of big sacks/bags". It's just a thought which I'm percolating. I might be way off. Hopefully someone might look at the word and will know exactly what it is.

Thanks for looking into this so much, Angela!

Yeah it's strange that he would go from bag maker to collector to property owner in a 17 year timeframe while in his 70s and 80s.

Or maybe he was just good at everything. :D
