Ponzio Family

Post by smylis »

Hello! I am hoping that someone out there can help me...

I have been trying to find my Italian ancestors, but have hit a brick wall. This is the information I have:

Great-Grandparents:
Charles (Carmen) Ponzio b. January 22, 1883 married Concetta b. April 29, 1884 in Italy. They had a baby boy that died in Italy then they came to America in the early 1900's. They first lived in Pennsylvania, then came to Denver, Colorado where they had six children. The children's names are: Oswaldo, Lebia, Silvio, Virginia who passed away as an infant, Gilda, and Rolando.

I belive Concetta's madien name was Cardamone. Her father was Dieco of Celico, Calabria Italy. She had 4 sisters - Maria, Rachela, Rose & do not know the name of the other sister.
Maria married Frank Rotello in August of 1907 and they setteled in Denver, Colorado (Maria and Frank are also my great-grandparents as my grandparents were cousins).
Rachela married Nunziato Straface in Denver, Colorado in 1909.

I would be grateful for any information anyone may have on my Ponzio/Cardamone family! Thank you in advance.... :)

I am looking to go back as far as I can with my ancestors - who were Carmen's parents? His siblings? His grandparents? Birthplace? Also more on Concetta and her family - her grandparents, births, etc.

Have you located ship manifest which may list addidtional clues?
Checked census for naturalization status?
Town of origin must be identified to obtain Italian records, either by correspondence or Lds microfilm.

IF the town of origin for Concetta is Celico, the Lds has microfilmed records of births, marriages, banns, marriage documents, deaths.

Finding the marriage act of Concetta may list addidtional info on husband,
as the marriage usually took place in the brides home.....see following...

Trish has done a wonderful outline on using Lds resources..

I have relatives with the last name Cardamone. Some settled in Colorado. I think theres a posting on Ancestry message board for a Concetta Cardamone but I'll have to check. I'm sending you a private message.

Hi Gina,

Here are Charles draft cards:

Charles

It states his wife as Concetta.

Thanks for emailing me. I'll get back to you with that information of the Cardamone surname!

So Concetta was Clara on the 1920 census and Carmen was Charles, right?

It shows Clara as coming immigrating in 1907 and Charles has already filed for naturalization and arrived in 1899. In the 1930 census, it shows a naturalized Charles arrived in America in 1906.

1920 info:

Charles Ponzio Denver, Denver, Colorado abt 1885 Italy White

View Record Osvaldo Ponzio Denver, Denver, Colorado abt 1909 Colorado White
View Record Libia Ponzio Denver, Denver, Colorado abt 1911 Colorado White
View Record Sylvie Ponzio Denver, Denver, Colorado abt 1912 Colorado White

This is the 1930 info.

View Record Charles Ponzio Conchela Ponzio Denver, Denver, CO abt 1884 Italy Head

View Record Rolando Ponzio Charles Ponzio,
Conchela Ponzio Denver, Denver, CO abt 1922 Son

In 1910 census, this was the only info I could find...no image available to view census.

1910 United States Federal Census Recordinfo
about Carmino Ponzio
Name: Carmino Ponzio
Age in 1910: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1885

This might help with naturalization info. If you need me to link images let me know.

Wow - thanks for the info - these are definitely my great-grandparents.

I had not known that Concetta also went by Clara, so that's a good bit of information to know. Carmen was definitely Charles though.

If you wouldn't mind linking the images, that would be great!

Thanks again for the info, this gives me more to search on.

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via Roma, 67
87053 Celico (CS)
Italy

or to

Archivio di Stato di Cosenza

Hi,
It took so long to figure out how to post this note, I'm not sure who first wrote! But I believe I can help find the family of Diego Cardamone of Celico. I'm a Celico researcher. Please try to find me... I guess by leaving a note on the site.

I believe the Maria Cardamone you mentioned was my grandmother. She was married to Francesco Rotello (or Rotella - we were never quite sure of the spelling), my grandfather. They settled in the Denver area in the early 1900s and Maria passed away between 1918 and 1920 at a very young age.

My father had a cousin named Osvaldo Ponzio (as kids we called him "Uncle Ozzie"). Osvaldo was married to Rose (Rosie) and from my childhood I also remember the names Concetta, Silvio, and Rolando Ponzio. I don't recall the name Gilda or Lebia, however, I do believe you and I are related.

I don't know that I can help you learn about your ancestors in Italy but would love to chat with you about our family.
