Pidd, Melilli, Lincolnshire.

Post by Jamie0S »

I'm following up on some family tree research for a friend descended from a family called Pidd.

They come from Lincolnshire, England but a series of generations have Italian forenames despite them all apparently being born in Lincolnshire.
Via the Ellis Island website I found two young Italian girls with the surname Pidd travelling from Melilli to Middletown to join their father.

The Pidd family name certainly comes from Lincolnshire, but there is clearly an Italian link that we are finding impossible to trace.

I'd be grateful for any information anyone has on any Pidd-Italian link, thanks.

Sebastiana, that's her. Thanks for the extra details.

So her name should be Sebastiana Oresco then. Why is she listed as Sebastiana Pidd?

Valerie and I spent a good portion of last night working on this. On the 1910 census she is listed as a 16 year old Annie or Anina Aresco. She was probably married by the 1920 census so her name changed again. Unfortunately, I didn't hit submit when I looked up the info and it "disappeared" on me.

There were other children on the census other than Sebastiana that were born in the US.

I would have to look it up for up if you are interested. We're unsure as to why the name Pidd was used. Could it be possible that she was adopted? Or that her mother was originally English but passed away? The person travelling with them acting as their guardian was a 17 year old female with the same last name travelling with a male friend. It's listed on another page of the same manifest. Also, her younger brother was named Sebastino, which is interesting.

Any other thoughts...Suanj is usually great with this sort of stuff.

Let me know your thoughts and what you need and I'll see what I can do.

I suggest you to write and request Sebastiana birth certificate (or request the integral copy of the birth act) to:

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via Neruda Pablo, 1
96010 Melilli (SR)
Italy

or contact

Archivio di Stato di Siracusa

or rent Melilli civil record microfilmto FHL (mormon church) nearest to you

I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

We're going to come back to this odd Pidd reference another time, and see if we can come from another direction so to speak.

Having talked to another branch of the family it's possible that this paricular group of Pidd's in Lincolnshire shortened their surname.

Does anyone have any ideas what their original surname could be? Any Piddescos or similar Italian family names out there?

Thanks for that. Piddisi sounds an interesting route to try. I'll pass it on.

Personally I think that the
PEDDIO
PEDDIU
PEDDI
it are more probables.. for sure the Pidd surname is a short shape of a italian surname..
