Researching Gattuso family in Valanidi, Calabria

Post by Dangat »

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and am excited to be here!

I have some questions.

1. Is anyone else doing research on the Gattuso family in Valanidi, Calabria?

2. I'm having a devil of a time trying to figure out what the differences are among Serro Valanidi, Rosario Valanidi, etc. I think Rosario Valanidi is a village associated with Reggio, but Serro Valanidi is a frazione assocated with Motta San Giovanni. To make matters worse, I think Serro Valanidi is simultaneously subsumed under Rosario Valanidi! If you can provide any clarity, please do so!

3. It appears that there's not much in the way of churches in Valanidi. To which diocese might these churches belong? I think the most likely suspect (for being my ancestors' church, that is) is Chiesa San Nicola di Bari. If that's the case, I want to get in touch with the hierarchy to find out about any birth/confirmation/marriage/death records that the church might have on my relative, whether the record(s) is(are) on paper, digitally archived, etc.

4. My great-grandpa left Valanidi in bout 1905 and never made it back to Italy. The last time anyone from my family visited, it was my great-grandpa's nephew (who is now 76 years old, and who visited Valanidi in 1977 and met some of his relatives). No one stayed in touch, however, so since I'm going to Italy next summer, I'd like to find out if i have any relations in that area. Do you just wander around and talk to locals, and/or stop by the police station and ask them?

Thanks,

Dan

How about contacting some "potential" relatives before your trip?

There are two Gattuso listings in the Italian Phone book (landlines).
You might want to write and inquire about the family.

Until halfway the 18th century there was only one Valanidi with the parish S. Nicola. It was up in the mountains and was later on referred to as Valanidi Superiore. In the course of the 18th century people initiated a settlement near the coast which was referred to as Valanidi Inferiore. The first one now is called Rosario Valanidi and the second one Croce Valanidi. The parish registers of Rosario Valanidi go back until 1762. The registers of Croce Valanidi are lost completely.
Serro Valanidi is just a fraction of Motta San Giovanni.
The name Gattuso appears mainly in Cardeto, Villa San Giovanni and Valanidi. Take a look on my website http://www.benvanrijswijk.com/fontigenealogiche.htm. The pictures of the baptisms, marriages and deaths of these villages can be seen on this website: https://www.archiviodiocesanoreggiobova ... rocchiali/. On this website you can find Valanidi between the parishes of Reggio Calabria.

If you're looking for current relatives in the area and you're starting with zero knowledge, a good way is Facebook. Many Italians use it quite a bit, and searching for the Gattuso surname in Valanidi, and perhaps some of the nearby towns might find you some useful contacts.

I know this is a few months late...

dangat - There is a Gattuso family Facebook group that you can be added to if you like. We try to get to the bottom of some of the connections between the Gattuso family and many of the other related families (from which I descend) in the Valanidi / Pellaro / Gallina / Motta S. Giovanni area. My grandmother was a Battaglia from Motta (Paterriti) and was baptized at the church in Oliveto (which I believe is considered part of Valanidi Inf.). I am also related to the Alampis, Cuzzucreas, Quattrones, Rogolinos, Francos etc. Many of these intermarried regularly with the Gattusos.

Have you linked up with any Gattusos on Ancestry? If you would like more info on linking up with other Gattusos, please let me know. The Facebook group has some Gattusos still in R.C. I believe.

Primo - Thank you for your information! I am so sad to hear about the loss of the registers from Croce; do you know what happened to them.
