Luigi Cinque 1829-1898

Post by alching » 14 Sep 2018, 18:12

Still researching for information on my 2nd great grandfather Luigi Cinque from Pagani. I know he was married to Filomena Cascone, and they had children. My Great grandfather was Alessandro Cinque (Alexander Ching). I believe they had other children, Gabriel for sure, there may be others but not sure if it was the same birth mother. I have found that he may have married a second time to a Philomena G Benedetto and they may have children as well. I have received so much help from this site and appreciate all your hard work. Any more insight on my heritage would be appreciated as well.
Thank you,
Alexander Ching

Do you have an approximate approximate marriage date for either marriage or a birth date of the oldest children by either marriage?

Yes Alessandro Cinque was born 5 Nov 1863, Gabriel was born 186, Antonio 1884, Anna 1873 but shows she was born in Napoli not Pagini, Lucia 1875, Gennero 1867. There is an Obituary for an Antonio Stola that says Gennero and Gabriel are step brothers. Thank you

Here is a link to Alessandro's birth record, giving info on him, his parents, and his grandparents. The official record has his birth date as the 2nd, not the 5th. Key data translated below.

On November 2, 1863 Luigi Cinque, age 27, son of Tommaso, domiciled in Pagani, appeared at the town hall and presented a male child that he declared was born of his wife, Girolama Cascone, age 24, daughter of Felice, in their home on that day at noon. The child was given the name of Alessandro.

Some of it is slightly easier to read on the index

Based on the birth info for Alessandro, we would expect that Luigi, son of Tommaso, was born in 1835 or 1836. He doesn’t appear in the index to the birth in 1836. In 1835, there is no index, so you would just have to page through those to see if you find him. I'll leave that project to you if you want do that. The 1837 records are not on the antenati site. In 1834 there is a birth record for Giuseppe Cinque, likely a sibling of Luigi. Key data translated:

On October 30, 1834 at the town hall in Pagani appeared Tommaso Cinque, age 36, tenant farmer, son of the late Giuseppe (Cinque), domiciled in Pagani on Strada Strettola, who presented a male child, and he declared that the child was born of his wife Luigia di Mulino, age 23, daughter of the late Saverio, in their home that day at 9 a.m. and the child was given the name of Giuseppe.

The link is below. Two pages.

Thank you much for your hard work, I have been troubled by this because of conflicting records. When I first started research my great grandfathers listed Sicignano degli Alburni a town in the province of Salerno as his place of residence. Is it possible that there is just a coincidence? Here is some records found by Marty here at ItalianGenealology.com

Looks like his resided in Sicignano degli Alburni but they where born in Pagani

The marriage record of Luigi Cinque and Filomena Cascone. Info on Luigi’s parents is different than on the birth record of Alessandro. The mother’s first name in that birth record is also different. Key data from the record.

August 13, 1859, at town hall in Pagani appeared, Luigi Cinque, a single man, age 24, born in this town, tenant farmer, son of the late Francesco (Cinque) and of Brigida Ragosa, who lives with her son, and Filomena Cascone, a single woman, age 22, born in Pagani, daughter of Tobia, tenant farmer, who lives with his daughter, and Lucrezia Caucello? who lives with them, who in the presence of witnesses requested to be married. We honored the request after reviewing the following documents:
1. Birth record of the husband
2. The abstract of the death records of the father. Witnesses testify that the spouse is of legal age.
3. Birth record of the wife
4. Abstract of the notifications of intent to marry previously published at the town hall
5. The mother of the husband and the father of the wife present at this act give there express formal consent.
Four witnesses and their information follows that. The link is below.

The birth record of Gabriele Cinque is at the link below. Key data transcribed. His occupation is listed a colono, same as in several other records, not giornaliere, so I think at least that part of the transcription you have seems inaccurate. The witness (Angelo Fedele) occupation is gionaliere.

September 19, 1862 at town hall in Pagani, appeared Luigi Cinque, age 26, tenant farmer (colono), son of the late Tommaso, and presented a male child that he declared was born on September 18, 1862 of his wife Filomena Cascone, age 22, daughter of Tobia, and the child was given the name of Gabriele.

Great work bbivona!!! :) I think the deceased mother's name is Riginalda??? Desiderio (probably more often spelt Reginalda).

It's possible, although if it is two different Luigis of the same age, they also both married a Filomena Cascone. There's also the issue of Filomena Cascone as his wife, except in one of the birth records his wife is listed as Girolama Cascone.

Hopefully the following will help solve some of the discrepancies:

Allegati for the 1859 marriage of Luigi Cinque and Filomena Cascone begin here: http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 2.jpg.html

They tell us that:

Luigi Cinque was born on 28 April 1835, to Tommaso Cinque, 38 yo, who was the son of "Antonio Cinque" His mother was Brigida Ragosa, daughter of deceased Luigi Ragosa.(Birth Extract of Act No 143)
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

Tommaso Cinque, died in 1857 on 15 October. He was 63 yo, born Pagani (circa 1794), Colono, the son of the deceased "Antonio Cinque" and of the deceased "Fortunata Nacchio". He was the husband of Brigida Ragosa.
(Death Extract of Act No 298)
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

If you take a look at the Notification Extract of No 55, it also tells us that Luigi Cinque, was the son of the deceased Tommaso (Cinque) and Brigida Ragosa. I believe that there is an error in the "original" marriage record posted here, where it says that Luigi Cinque was the son of deceased "Francesco" It should read deceased "Tommaso" but the clerk misread the "Notification" and instead wrote the mayor's name "Francesco"???
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

Anyways, I hope this all makes sense. It's really important to get these basics confirmed and established. You might like to look for the original 1857 death record (No 298) and the original 1835 birth record (No 143) and check them off against what I have written here, as sometimes there are errors made in the transcribing from the original document to the extracts (as you can see here).
