please share your best ideas for my DOMENICO YACKETTA pursuit?

Post by orenlangfurr » 06 Jan 2019, 07:36

My great grandfather was Domenico Yacketta. His death certificate tells me he died in SOLVAY NEW YORK outside Syracuse on 24 SEP 1928, that he was born on 25 MAY 1885 in NAPLES ITALY, and that his father's name was Constanto (for mother it says "can't be learned"). His WW I draft card says he was born on 26 MAY 1884.

I would love to clarify where in Italy he was born and who his parents were. The digging I've done thus far makes it seem as though I need to search each specific geography. This issue is compounded by the fact that YACKETTA is clearly a spelling of a name upon immigration. Perhaps it was Giachetta in Italy?

Does anyone have any suggestions here or ideas or indexes that could send me down the right path?

THANK YOU for you consideration.

I see one researcher on Ancestry corrected a ship arrival manifest from

Name: Dominco Janetti
[Dominico Yaccetti]
Arrival date: 24 Apr 1908
Birth Date: abt 1884
Birth Location: Potenza
Birth Location Other: corriguo
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Nord America

And here is his person record - https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/pe ... 0366/facts

Hope this helps. I suspect the census worker changed the name and not immigration. This is very common.

Hello, I found this on Find A Grave. This looks to be your relative. :-)

Ship manifest and naturalization papers should help. There are tips on my website for Finding the town of origin that might help.

I believe that the surname is Iacchetta. The "I" would have sounded like a "y".

1920 census for Dewitt, Onondaga County

Dominic Yacckilla Head M 35 Italy---immigration year 1908, alien
Cora Yacckilla Wife F 33 New York
Bernon Yacckilla Son M 4 New York

Rose Yacckilla Daughter F 1 New York
Lawrence Yacckilla Son M 0 New York

If WWI Draft cards are available for Onondaga county, it might have his place of birth.

I believe that the better record matching enough is:
First Name : Domenico
Last Name : Tacchetta (IACCHETTA right)
Nationality : Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence : Celano
Date of Arrival : March 13th, 1905
Age at Arrival : 20
Gender : Male
Marital Status : Single
Ship of Travel : Algeria (1891)
Port of Departure : Naples
Manifest Line Number : 0028

final destination Charlotte, Rochester, NY and joining to Filippo Zannino, cousin....; the 1905 census found from Tessa :) has june's date... in same trip other italian coming from Celano, going in Rochester town that is no far from Lyons... I believe that after a few days, moved in Lyons....
matching age name, and my opinion is that this record is abt right person...

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR IDEAS. The WWI draft card, the one on ancestry (in my family tree) are the right one. The 1908 arrival I've ruled out as my great grandfather. I need to figure out how to validate this 1905 arrival as this seems like the best lead thus far. It is my great grandfather's birth city and parents i'm in search of as I can't get further back than him in my family tree. I'll get to work on Celano records to see if I can match up the birthday or something additional to confirm this lead! THANK YOU.
