Post by brendariani » 10 Apr 2019, 14:50

Hi,

I am trying to do some research for a friend. His great grandfather's Surname is Retalic if spelt correctly). He is not sure which part of Italy he came from?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Using the Italian surname distribution map site, there are no listings for "Retalic, Retalio, Retalia" - BUT there is a hit for "Retali" as a surname.

Though the surname exists in very small numbers throughout Italy, the largest concentration of the name is on The Island of Elba.

Perhaps a possibility???

From what written sources to you take this surname? Can you post a link or image?

T.

I'm afraid that is all I know at present, but may be able to get further information from the family. Will update once I know.

Your help is much appreciated. I did wonder if Retalic was the correct spelling, so now we know.

Many thanks.

There is also a small population with the name Rotolico/Rotelico/Ratolico, etc. Very possible the end was dropped after leaving Italy. Can be found around Naples and Rome.
Apricena, Caltanissetta, Grottolella, Montefredane, Salerno, San Severo, Vasto
Currently transcribing all Grottolella/Montefredane records from 1809 onward

Sounds like something from the eastern territories which are now in Slovenia and Croatia. Possibly spelled Retalić or Retalich originally.
🇺🇸🇮🇹 I am an ATA and CIOL translator and I translate vital records from English and Spanish to Italian.
