Jodice? What is the non-Anglicized version?

Post by WilliamBradlee » 19 May 2019, 05:42

Hello -

My grandmother's parents immigrated to the Boston area around the late 1870s. They were born in 1862. I know them as Jodice. I assume the name in Italian was something like Yodiche. He (Bennedeto) was a tailor. Her maiden name was Gallo. I always heard that they came from Naples and that they met on the boat to the US. I have quite a few photos of them (my grandmother, her parents and her siblings) in the US, but no knowledge of their life in Italy. My grandmother, born in 1904, never spoke to me about her family or her heritage. I have the impression that she, being a first generation American growing up around WWI, may have wanted to bury her heritage.

Any thoughts on how I might find the Italian spelling and try to research their history in Italy?

The Italian language sounds every letter in every word.
You need to listen to how your family pronounced the name.
The surname IODICE does exist in Npales.

Based on the 1900 census, it appears they might have been married previously (likely about 1887) since it shows them living in Boston with 7 children ranging in ages from 12 to 3. All children born in Massachusetts.
