Checked indices for year 1888, and a few years before and after in Lucca.
Did not find Nicolo.
However, the Giovannoni surname is not as common as some others. I did find a few children in that year range born to Anastasio Giovannoni.

Also checked Santa Margherita, without success.

According to his marriage, he was from San Ginesio (San Ginese Castello, I think, part of Capannori):

Father is said to be away; maybe he was abroad.
I can't find Nicola's birth in ten-years index

me too.. it makes sense, because on the census posted by me above, a lodger was Pete Belluomini and the mother of Fiore was Rosa Belluomini, so maybe Pete was no just a lodger but a relative…

Marty - yes, this is Caroline.

Susanj YES, this is him! We didn't know his brothers name - just that they came over to San Francisco before heading to Wisconsin then to Illinois.

PippoM -- thank you for finding the marriage

Thank you all so much! I recently made a Facebook group page for all the relatives of Ester Belluomini and Olimpio Passaglia -- the cousins are all contributing and finding out so much more about their ancestry.

Raffaella,
I have a Rosa Belluomini in my tree - she married Michaelangelo Belluomini. I don't know if Rosa's maiden name was Belluomini or something else. They had 4 children: Mansueto Belluomini (1863), Ester Belluomini (1871), Maria Angela Belluomini (1897), Massimiliano Belluomini. Would the mother of Fiore be this Rosa too? or is this another Rosa.
