So other than looking at card catalogs at lutheran churches etc........
can you look at church records or do you have to in quire to the church in Sicily?

You'll need to specify where you're looking. Some Sicilian church records back to the late 1500s or farther are available through familysearch without a membership. Off the top of my head I know that Caltanissetta and surrounding towns in particular are available (even though they appear locked on the website).
Apricena, Caltanissetta, Grottolella, Mazzarino, Montefredane, Salerno, San Severo, Vasto

Example: I went to Caltanissetta/Vallelunga and looked for the death of Giuseppa Spoto 12/06/1929.......but the indexes do not go past 1910.

Family Search can only digitize the records held by the archive they are working with. The years held can vary from archive to archive. If the year you need is not there then you will need (in your case) to contact the Comune.
