Trying to find out more about my great-grandfather Nick Gentile

Post by MAC7 »

Hi,

I’m not sure what happened with my first post. I am trying to learn more about my great-grandfather, Nick Gentile (b. 1885?) He had my grandmother, Nicolina Gentile, in 1933 in Cleveland Ohio, with my great-grandmother Josephine Gugliotta (b. 1898). I found out from a dna match that their great-grandfather’s sister Jennie or Giovannina Zarbo (b. 1873) was married to Antonino Gentile (b. 1864) and Jennie had a daughter named Julia. They lived in Buffalo, New York. I think Antonino might have been Nick’s father possibly but Jennie would’ve been too young to be his mother. If anyone could help me figure out who he was I’d really appreciate it.

Hi, have you tried any genealogy websites? Familysearch.org is free and has a lot of records. Good luck!

Is he the same one whose first wife was Angelica and was born 12 June 1885 in Siculiana? Unfortunately the births in this town for 1885 and 1886 are missing. I did, however, find the couple you mention in this town.

Rosa Gentile born 24 Aug 1887 to parents Antonino Gentile, 24, & Giovanna Zarbo, 20

Also born to this couple:

Stefana born 24 Aug 1890

Gerlanda born 25 July 1892

Gerlanda born 8 Dec 1895

Leonarda Crocifissa born 4 May 1899
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=422226

This couple was married in 1886 so they are probably not your ancestor's parents but are likely related.

Death of Nicolo's father Antonino Gentile on 17 Jan 1908 in Siculiana, age 65, son of Vincenzo Gentile (deceased) and Isabella Modica Amore (deceased), husband of Maria Zarbo
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=422226

Birth of Antonino Gentile (from your DNA match, not Nicolo's father) on 14 Mar 1864 to parents Gerlando Gentile, 35, and Rosa Bianco, 25
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

From the above Gerlando Gentile's marriage in 1855 he has the same parents as your ancestor Antonino Gentile so they were brothers. Therefore your Nicolo Gentile & the Antonino Gentile that you saw in NY were cousins. That makes you and this DNA match 4th cousins. However, there could also be a relation on the Zarbo side. I will look when I have time.

Thank you so much everyone for all your help and continued help. I appreciate it so much. I’m really trying to confirm exactly who my great-grandfather was. There were rumors but I was hoping to find more than that. When I found the Zarbo connection it pointed me in a certain direction. I thought I found all I could on familysearch and felt like I hit a brick wall. Thanks for helping me bust through it. I wish I knew more but I don’t think my grandmother knew much about her father and it was something we never talked about. There was so much that side of my family never talked about.

My dna match is my fourth cousin. The only one closer with Southern Italian dna is my uncle(he’s also my closest dna match overall) and he knows nothing. I also reached out to a distant match who is a Zarbo as well and a 2nd cousin to my 4th cousin match but they haven’t responded.

Thank you for everything! When you have time I’d love to know which Maria Zarbo married Antonino and if she is related to Giovannina. I’ll keep looking in the meantime.

Thanks! Oh wow, I saw Rosa Cuffaro’s name on a passenger list. Giovannina and Gerlanda Gentile were meeting her. At the time I wasn’t sure if she was Giovannina’s or Gerlanda’s mother and now I know.

Going of the information so far would it be safe to say that my great-grandfather most likely was the same Nick Gentile who was married to Angelica? I don’t want to jump to any conclusions too quickly.

I think you need more verification/connections.

Perhaps look for the death of Maria Angelica Cappello, and the marriage with Josephine (Giuseppa?) Gugliotta, mentioning that he is a widower?

Do you have arrival manifest or naturalization records for Nicolo?

EDIT TO ADD:

This should clarify!!!
Here is a naturalization for Nicolo' Gentile - with wife Angelica - mentioning the 1910 marriage that was posted above, and listing 6 children who reside with her in Italy.
There is a photo of Nicolo' on the record - IS THAT your GGF? If yes, then you can connect him to Angelica as a married couple :-)

ALSO...
Here is a 1930 arrival manifest where Nicolo' references his wife, Angelica, in Realmonte.

He didn’t marry my great-grandmother. I think my grandmother was actually the product of an affair he might have had with my great-grandmother while he was in Cleveland. I have a picture of my great-grandfather that resembles a photo of Nick when he was arrested in 1937. I think they look like the same person but I’m not 100% sure. In my photo he’s all dressed up and it’s a 3/4 profile shot. The police photo is straight on and he’s four years older and looks thinner with more white hair. They have the same hairline and chin but it’s too hard for me to tell.
