Quairolla Surname

Post by ecashmore »

Good morning all!

I am looking for information on Mary Quairolla - born around 1846 in italy according to the 1881 UK census.

She married Joseph Quoroll in Stoke on Trent in 1870. Joseph was born in Genoa around 1842 (original srname Queirolo).

They were my great great grandparents.

I cant find any information anywhere on the surname Quairolla (as listed on the marriage certificate). I've looked on ancestry and http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it to no avail.

Could anyone help shed some light on this?

Much appreciated!

The UK marriage record should give her maiden name. It is strange that they would each have the same unusual surname.

Were they married in church or registry office? If church then see if a marriage record can be found. It's possible she didn't speak English and the registrar just wrote the same name as her husband.
Birth records of any children should have her maiden surname.
Look for her in census records prior to the marriage.

Also Corolla. Pronunciation of Quorollo is almost the same.

Thanks. She had three children but the birth records on ancestry show no maiden name for Mary.
Quairola does sound very similar to Queirolo/Qouroll. Its a mystery!

There is also no death recorded for her but I know by the 1901 census that Joseph was a widower.

Evening. Today I received the marriage certificate of Joseph Quoroll and Mary Quairolla. Mary's father is listed as Anthony Quairolla, farmer. I can not find this surname anywhere! Any help much appreciated.

Hi - Currently, the surname "Quairolla" isn't found anywhere it Italy:

Maybe "Quairolla" is a misspelling of the "Queirolo" name you were searching for previously?

But that would mean that they were related?

That's a good point. An alternative idea is that the surname "Quairolla" is now extinct, having been lost through a sequence of marriages.

It is most likely the same surname Queirolo - people from small villages or towns often married others with the same surname. How closely they are related can be pretty variable. They could be first cousins or they could share a common ancestor hundreds of years before their marriage. You'll have to trace both of their lineages to be sure.

Thank you. I was thinking could also be Quairoli. I have seen more of those on ancestry

rlw254 is right - people from the same comune, who shared the same surname, occasionally did marry. I've seen many such records in Carovilli, where two Di Giacomo's would marry. In that comune, Di Giacomo is a very common name, so these may represent marriages between distant cousins. Even so, in my researches I discovered an 1890 marriage (in Italy) between first cousins - they weren't ancestors of mine, by the way!
