Piano(oggi Piano di Sorrento)

Post by daisy20 »

If a child was born with unknown parents, would there still be birth record, and if so, where would it be found?

Daisy? Oh no, not you again!

In the same place with the other birth records. I've seen it happen in my family. They might record '"genitori ignorati" or something like that.

Good question, Daisy. Yes, there should be. As to where you will find it, depends on the time frame. Prior to 1866, check out the Diversi records, as often births of abandoned children are recorded there. Post 1865, check out the supplementary records which are sometimes called Part 2 etc. There's a really good discussion about this on the forum. I'll find it and post it here - that way it saves me going into lots of depth about it.

So when you say you are looking for a child born to unknown parents, what document do you have that connveys this. Can you post it for us to look at.

Edit to Add: Here's the discussion about the types of records you may expect to find in Diversi and Part II. Scroll down to Carubia's comment. S/he's covered the topic really well. https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/ ... II#p269253

Here is the extract from their marriage processetti describing the record for Raffaele's birth. He was left at the wheel as one might expect. 22 Apr 1813.

Over the next few pages you'll also see the extract for Lucia's birth on 9 June 1816 and the parental consent information
