hi, Cerruti is tipical of Italy north, no south ... if you write some other detail, as first name is better for help you.. also are various Piano or Piana in Campania province, all hamleth, with exception of Piano di Sorrento near Napoli and Salerno.... the surname spelling could be CERRATO very common in this area... also are alternate spelling CERRUTO.
regards, suanj

I am sure that it is the town piano di sorrento, I have to ask my uncle about his grandparents and what were their names because it has my grandparents death records but goes nothing beyond that about any of their parents. I just want to know why it changed from Cerruti to what it is know.

Cerruti is the more common spelling, to see for yourself,
place the surname in cognome on the left of the screen and click on the arrow at the following site, http://www.gens.labo.net/
it will show the distribution of the surname on a map of Italy......

Need to place the family on a census, which will provide naturalization info and immigration info.......locating a ship manifest may provide other relatives names.......

Can you provide the names of the other children in the family, besides Peter Jr. and also the wife's name?

As for the name, that is based on the spelling you provided....need to check the spelling provided by Suanj as well....along with a manifest!!

Hi Cheroti101..

I merged your 2 topics...please, try and keep all the info contained to one. Its too difficult to follow otherwise.

Thanks

Sorry, can't answer your question.....Perhaps by tracing the family or talking to other family members, you'll get the answer.

Here is some possiblities as to what the name could have been.

By input I mean to say we need further details, as much as you can provide:

full names
spouse name
birthdates
childrens names
birthdates
where can we expect to find them and when.

We need to start with Peter and work backwards if we are to discover his parents, immigration and naturalization, both of which may turn up the ORIGINAL surname......

Peter was born in Chicago in 1912.....when did he move to California?
Did he have brothers or sisters? Do you know the names of the parents?
Your grandfather was killed in jail.......his name? His brothers name? His wifes name?
Did Peters mother remarry?.........By providing this info we can find and identify the family thru source records......without it, we are but guessing.

we are here to help....
