Tesio, Varino and Parato families

Post by Vivian »

First of all I want to again thank Nuccia, Trish, V.J., Ann, and SuanJ for the past help that they have given me with this research. These ladies have helped me obtain a great deal of the information that I currently have on my ancestors. Below are just a few of the missing pieces that I'm still trying to obtain: (1) the town(s) in Italy where my ancestors came from - a very good possibility is Northern Italy, near Torino, Piemonte region, (2) the dates and places of death for Domenico and Caterina Tesio -likely Manhattan, New York, (3) a date of birth for Caterina Tesio, and (4)possible other immigration manifests for Domenico -who may have originally arrived in late 1883 or early 1884, (5) names of 2 unknown children of Domenico and Caterina Tesio (that may have died at birth or very young). Any additional help or information is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thank you, Vivian

Here is a brief list of information that I already have:

1900 Census – 4 children, 2 living
1910 Census
1920 Census w/brother-in law Domenico Varino living with them

Caterina (Katie) Varino-Tesio
Married Domenico Tesio in 1890
Estimated Year of Birth: 1870

Year of immigration 1891?, ship manifest 10/8/1894 SS La Burgogne

Pietro (Peter) Andrew Tesio - Brother of Domenico
Born 12/4/1868 Birthplace: Italy, Lived in New York 39 years at his time of death (incorrect)

V.J. - you've truly have lived up to your master title. I can not tell you how many manifests I've gone through looking for the 1883 or 1884 arrival of Domenico and Pietro. The ages look right so I'll continue to confirm. I know that I could learn a lot from you and your research techniques. You're wonderful for helping others. :D Thank you again. Vivian

Vivian,
You're very welcome! :D
We all really enjoy a challenge.

The addition of the NY Manifests to ancestry.com really
simplified this search. Used first three intials of 1st name,
no last name, approx birth year, approx manifest year.
Both Dom & Pietro came up with the same last name: Feris
Looking at the 'Feris' manifest it looked possible for Tesio.

Hi Vivian,

Three things you may want to try......

1. Church records: many times sacramental records will have additional information that was required by the church.

2. SS application: Since Domenico Tesio died abt 1954, he may have applied for social security.

3. Since you have parents names from brother Peter's, DC & Domenico's & Pietro's birth dates (use as approx), you can try contacting the province archive of the Northern provinces & request their military records (foglio matricolare) and/or military draft card (listro di leva).

Gaetano Online has links to all the archives with their contact information.

Hope this helps.

JCSM - Thank you so much for the reply. Are you referring to church records in the US or in Italy? I'll do a little research on how to pursue that, thank you for the suggestion. I have been unable to find a SS #, date of death or place of death for Domenico (although I believe that he died in New York). Since Domenico was only 17 and Pietro was only 15 (young) would they have Italian military records? I tried to obtain military information from my granfather's records (Domenico's son) and I was denied information because of privacy issues. I'm not his next of kin (they are all deceased) and being the closest living relative doesn't help. Again I will do a little more research. All of your suggestions are appreciated and I thank you for your willingness to help. Vivian

Hi Vivian,

I was referring to US church records, since Italian town is unknown.

They may have Italian military records even though they immigrated prior to military draft age.....Also check for birth records at the archives.

Keep us posted.

Joyce, thank you for the reply. I am currently attempting to locate the New York church or churches that the family may have attended. It would appear that each church keeps their own records (marriage, baptismal, deaths etc) Without knowing the Italian town that the family came from is it possible to order military records? Maybe a record on Pascale Tesio (born in 1898 and immigrated in 1920) could confirm the family relationship and provide additional information on the town they came from. Where would I write? Also I have several dates of birth, should I try the military records first and if they reply, then write the birth archives? Do you have the addresses of where I would write or e-mail? Your help is greatly appreciated. Vivian
