Scapuzzi surname

Post by M_A_A_B »

Hi everyone :) I'm new here :)

Ok...

I have found my GG Grandfather....his name was Dario Scapuzzi and he was born in Livorno, Italy c.1853

I have no idea when he came to England but the first record I have of him here is his first marriage to emma Cavill on the 4th August 1873 in Bedminster, Bristol. On the certificate it says he was a sailor and his father's name was Louis Scapuzzi.

I have lots of information about him after this but I'm not really sure where to start on looking for him while he was in Italy or how to find out about his family there and when and why he came to England.

If anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.

Thank you, Amy

Hi Amy!
Welcome to ItalianGenealogy!
The Livorno location and approx birth date -
are they from his marriage record?
It doesn't list his mother's name?
For Italian research it's necessary to have
his town of birth in order to request the
correct records for your family.

Thank you for your reply :)

Seems I'm not going to get very far :( I have a birth year for Dario but not an actual date....the only location I have is Livorno, I got this from three different censuses...no other details about place of birth. No mother's name, only his father's name was on his marriage certificate.

Guess I'm stuck :(

Hi M_A_A_B,

Do you have his death record? Birth records for his children? Marriage records? Sacramental records for these events? Naturalization Record? Ship manifest?

All these documents are good sources for the town information & some also for his mother's name.

Let us know.

Hi marriage records, death records etc are all English and they only have his father's name on them and say that he was born in Livorno, Italy. I have no idea what ship he arrived on or anything...I think it's much harder to find out those details for people who emigrated to England than America....not sure we have 'naturalisation' record either.

Oh...the birth records for his children also only say he was born in Livorno...

Hi Amy,

Many times clergy were required to provide more information than what is found on a civil record......So, Do you have the sacramental records for nis marriage? Births of children? It's definitely worth a shot.

Don't give up!.....Hopefully, you'll get that town location.

Keep us posted.

I dont understand what you mean by 'sacramental' records for his marriage and birth of his children.....not sure that we have those in the UK. I have a copy of his marriage certificate and am waiting on birth certificates for his children but have been told on good authority that there is no reference to Dario's mother on them (by other people researching the family)

Sacramental records (eg: baptismal record) are the same as church records. Clergy of the different religions often times were required to record more information than what is on a civil record. If you can, don't request certificates, but a copy or extract of the original record. Certificates have only the information that the person filling the request puts on it. This information may not be all that is on the actual record. For an example, an Italian birth certificate will have the place of the event, date of, name of the child & parents. The actual record also shows the parents ages, their occupations, their address, possibly their birth towns & possibly their father's first name.

Hope this explains it better.

Hi Amy
I am related to Martha Hoare's 1st husband Henry Hoare. She appears as Martha Scapuzzi in 1891 census for Bedminster Bristol UK. I am not sure of her relationship to Dario or Davy Scapuzzi as I have not found their marriage certificate. They seemed to be living together as husband & wife but not sure if she was the mother of any of Dario's children. Maybe you could give me more info on your ancestry.

Hi

Just found this site ... recently doing some family tree research into my wife's descendants.

Struggling to figure out the Scapuzzi line (david, dario, Davy etc etc doesn't help).

Happy to share info... but most has been mentioned here to be honest.

John
