Need help finding census records for my Great Grandparents.

Post by JIMMYSAL »

I was unable to locate any census records for my great grandparents and I would appreciate any help finding them or any other relative information. Their names were Salvatore Iaquinto born on Feb, 19 1889 and Maria Oliverio Iaquinto born on June, ? 1892. They lived in Fairmount, W. Virginia for a few years, anywhere from 1913 to 1918, I not sure of the exact time period and then they moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were they spent the rest of their lives. They had six children Rose, Catherine, Virginia, John, Anthony, and Sal. I am pretty sure they were both born somewhere in the Calabria region of Italy. I'm not sure when they immigrated to America.

In case you haven't seen this site:

http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx

there is a birth record for a Katherine, parents Sam and Mary.
Great database, copies of the actual records, not just the transcription.

The WW2 record states that he was from St. Johns, Calabria... could he have meant San Giovanni in Fiore, Calabria ?? (from Biff83's post)

There are many surnames transcribed as Jaquinta and Iaquinta...

City of San Giovanni in Fiore: Calabria Region - Italy.

Maria,

If we've got the right person, I located his brother Antonio's draft card which states place of birth as San Giovanni Fiore, so the birth place was Anglicized on Salvatore's record.

Hi Biff83,

Your WW2 draft card find really helped...

I had just edited my last post and noticed your reply!

I'm not too sure about the manifest I posted... this manifest tells me that he would be joining his brother Francesco... maybe another brother...?

Good candidate for ship manifest

Vessel--Cretic
Arrival NYC--15 June 1906
Salvatore Iaquinta, age 18
Birthplace San Giovanni
Destination, Coalton WV to join brother-in-law (I cannot decipher the name)

Perhaps someone can link the image?

Interesting to note how many people on this manifest show their last place of residence as San Giovanni and are heading for West Virginia.
