Mattera Family Name

Post by mattera »

Greetings,

I have just begun researching my family's genealogy. My family name is Mattera, and my paternal grandfather, Paolo Mattera, was the first to enter this country. I was able to find his name in a ship's manifest through the Ellisisland.com website (and discovered that his name was actually Pietro Paolo Mattera). I have not been able to locate additional records, such as census information, birth information for his children, marriage information (they may have been married in Italy), etc.

I am very new at this, and would be grateful for any pointers. Thank you all in advance for your help.

Yours,

Alex Mattera

Hi Alex,

Welcome to the forum!

We have a great team here who have found many hard to find records. If you would provide 1st names & birth years for Paolo's wife & children plus where they settled, we'll have a go at finding the census records & hopefully more.

Thanks,

jcsm

jcsm,

Thanks for the quick response! Here's what I have so far:

Pietro Paolo Mattera
DOB 9/14/1890

Wife
Maria (Arcucci) Mattera
DOB 1/17/1888

They had five sons:
Pasquale 11/2/1914
Francesco 4/11/1916
Antonio 8/18/1918
Giovanni 2/6/1921
Giuseppe 7/5/1923

They settled in Providence, Rhode Island. At some point, they lived at 30 Horton Street. All are deceased.

Thanks, vj. I have found Pietro Paolo in the manifest in both 1910 and in 1912 (which you cite below). From there I determined that his native town in Naples, Italy was Serrara Fontana. He lists a grandmother there as Maria Buono. He spent time in Passaic, NJ before traveling north to Rhode Island. Given that he came (for the second and last time) to the US in June 1912 and had his first son in RI in November 1914, he must have come to RI fairly soon after arriving in the US.

I was interested to discover that in 1910 he came to the US single and unable to read or write. In 1912, he reports that he was married (although his wife remained in Italy) and could read and write. I do not know when Maria Arcucci joined him in the US, but again, it could not have been long if they had a child in 1914. I cannot find record of her trip across from Italy.

Thank you again for your responses and information. This board is a wonderful community.

Vj.........You are amazing! :D :D :D It sure does match available information

Alex,

Didn't find any FHL films for Serrara Fontana, so you will need to write to the town for all records. Here is the address.

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via Roma, 79
80070 Serrara Fontana (NA)
ITALY

Requests should be in Italian & include a self addressed return envelope, a copy of your photo ID & 1 or more (depending on amount of records being requested) international reply coupons. These can be obtained from your main post office & cover the return postage (small price to pay for records!).

Interactive form letter to help with your requests.>

To help with translation of the records.>

Hope this helps. If you need anything else, have questions, etc., please don't hesitate to ask!

Thank you, Valarie and Joyce. I actually found it searching for surname Trofa from Serrara on Steve Morse's engine after I struck out searching for Maria Arcucci and variables. I guessed when Maria emigrated she wasn't traveling alone. Sometimes you get lucky.

Best,

Providence Directories
1929 30 Horton
1935 30 Horton

note on 1930 census
30 Horton St should be in ED18
ancestry.com has quite a few cropped pages in ED 18 :?
