Re: Mattera Family Name
Pardon the pun but here's a long shot for a possible 1920 census record for Frank and Teresa Longo. Best record I could find but only a possible.
Providence, Ward 3, Rhode Island
Address 75 Hazael Street
Frank Long, age 23, yob about 1897, place of birth Italy? occupation laborer worsted mill
Theresa Long, age 21, yob about 1899, place of birth Italy, immigration year 1916
No children in household
The birth dates are about correct, Teresa's yob is close and immigration year checks, no children is correct since first child Maria was born in April of 1920 per the Rhode Island birth records on Ancestry, and census was taken in January. Frank's occupation also is the same as the 1930 census but in 1920 the Providence textile mills employed many residents. Biggest problem is Frank's place of birth.

Biff,
The 1930 census is definitely correct--Vincent is my maternal grandfather. I don't know about the 1920, but I'll pore over it and see if I can't make some connections.

Alex,
Trying to locate the 1910 and 1910 census records for Frank Longo. Do you have any clues relative to parents' names, siblings, etc. which might help?

Biff and Valarie,
It's great to have two experts working so hard on my behalf. I do not have more particular information for Francesco. He was born in the U.S. and served in WWI. He was born in the late 1890s perhaps. Given his children's names, his or Teresa Ziroli's parents' names might have been Ralph, Vincent, Mary or Catherine. Based on her ship manifest listing, I think Teresa's father was Domenic.

Re: Mattera Family Name
Valarie, you are the master.
That's likely his WWII Draft Card, and the 29 June matches Alex's information as well as the SSDI information. Meanwhile, I've looked at almost every Francesco and Frank in the 1900 and 1910 census records for RI and MA and he was born in PA.
Alex, can you verify the street address on the WWII Draft Card and the month and year of death?

Re: Mattera Family Name
Biff,
Isn't it terrific when one known detail like 29 Jun can
lead us in a new direction!
Shame we can't find his WWI record. I've noticed before
that veterans generally don't have draft cards?

Valarie and Biff,
Thanks. I am actually away from my computer now (on the Blackberry) and will have limited access over the weekend. It may be Monday before I get a chance to view the images.

Re: Mattera Family Name
Biff and Valarie,
I'm back. Thanks again for hunting down the draft card. It is absolutely correct, and helps to clarify several mysteries. First, he was born in New Kensington, PA, not Italy or Rhode Island. Second, he was born in 1895, not 1899 or 1900. The information provided by family members turns out to be a very red herring.

Re: Mattera Family Name
Alex,
I'm sure Valarie and others are also looking but here's a 1900 census record I located for a Frank Longo, born June 1895 in Pennsylvania, living in Pittsburgh which is about 20 miles southwest of New Kensington. Lines 84 and following. It's only a possible but I thought I'd post it. If it's wrong, I'll delete.
Pittsburgh Ward 22, Allegheny, PA
Head--Jim Longo, born Oct/1855, Italy, year of immig 1890, naturalized
Wife--Mary, born Jul/1861, Italy, year of immig 1893
Son--Robert, born Dec 1884, Italy, year of immig 1893
Daughter--Rose, born Feb/1900 PA
Son--Frank, born Jun 1895, PA
Daughter--Katie, born Feb 1898 PA
