RUSSO'S IN AFRAGO, NAPLES

Post by merusso4 »

My great grandfather came to America in the late 1890's. He came by himself and his name was Vincenzo Russo. He lived near Cleveland, Ohio and married Elizabetha Capasso. He was from Afrago, Naples. He had 2 sisters. We are looking for any relatives. My grandfather's name is James Russo and he is still living in ohio.

Suanj already pointed out that your ggfather was from Afragola.

Yes I know, but I surprisingly do not get many responses regarding Russo's or other people related. I thought Russo was a very common name in Italy. Am I incorrect in thinking that? Does anyone have any history on Russo's?

Also, if you're expecting an immediate response, don't.

This forum is fairly active, but there are not that many people actively doing Italian Genealogy for you to get a match so quickly.

Generally speaking, I leave my data in here and other places throughout the net, sort of like dropping breadcrumbs everywhere so that when someone, somewhere decides to research it, they'll find me.

Then, I just check back every so often (months or years later).

You have to have patience with this, or actually actively seek out others (like contacting people from your family's home town).

I agree......I have had breadcrumbs spread out for over two years.....with the exception of a friend of the family and a cousin, both here in the USA,
I have yet to recieve a response from family in Italy......but maybe one day!!!!!

Hi Merusso4,

Below is my suggestion for tracing and finding relatives in the USA. Also, you are in Ohio and that is a very FRIENDLY state for records.

Your great grandfather immigrated in the late 1890's (per your post) so find him on the 1900 census and follow through to 1930. This will give you a snap shot of the family. You will know names and approximate years of birth of children. By using vital records, directories and writing to the county for marriage records you should be able to trace his decendents.

If this is your family, looks like wife went by the name Rosa:

Name: Vincenzo Russo
Age in 1910: 39
Estimated birth year: abt 1871
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's name: Rosa
Home in 1910: Cleveland Ward 13, Cuyahoga, Ohio
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1901
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Vincenzo Russo 39
Rosa Russo 38
Bran Russo 13
Joe Russo 3
Tony Russo 11/12

They are also on other years, just waiting for confirmation that this is the correct family.

No, actually I do not believe this is my family. Vincenzo, when he came to the US had his name changed to James and he died in 1918 at 34 so this would not be his correct age. He would have been born in about 1884/1885

Sorry it is the wrong family. But apply the same theory. Find your family in the census and follow it through the years. Keep track of all the sibilings. This will give you a start for identifying other decendents.

For reference 1920 census from mjones.

Elisabetha's father's name looks like Raphael.

edited to add--note the ages, places of birth, etc for the members of Caposso and Russo families. If correct, possible clues to other records.
