Defillipis/Bastianelli

Post by Emmy »

Hi Everyone
You all helped me so much in the past I thought I'd share a bit of good news with you all.
I still havent managed to get a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate yet but I feel that's still possible but the thing I had absolutely no hope of finding out was what my grandparents actually looked like because there was definately no photographs! That is until recently.
My cousin has just contaced me to let me know that after another cousin had died and old suitcase has been found and I think you will have guessed what was in it- A photograph of my grandparents. I still havent seen it yet but a copy has been ordered for me. I have been told my grandmother is wearing a locket which has been identified as a 'mourning locket' but I've never heard of that before. Be grateful if anyone can explain how its able to be identified as that?
Just cant wait for this photograph to arrive.

Hello Emmy, that's fantastic news :D !
One of many mourning customs (which pre-dates
the Victorian period) involves 'mourning jewelry'.
Here's a quick definition for you! Valarie

Mourning jewelry is a type of jewelry worn when mourning
the loss of a loved one. It is often black and made of jet or
black glass. After Queen Victoria's husband Albert died in
1861, she went into an extended period of mourning.
During these years, she wore black clothing and
mourning jewelry

ps: never thought my art history major could be used
for genealogy! your locket may also contain a lock of
hair, and/or a picture of the loved one

Many Thanks vj
Whe the photograph arrives I'll post a copy here. Dont expect I'll ever be able to see the actual locket but getting their photgraph is like winning the lottery.
