surnames looking for Caliguiri and Pellegrini

Post by nanci14 »

looking for info on my great grandparents. Francesco Caliguiri and Rachelle Tornello-Caliguiri also Concezio Pellegrini and Anna Giansante-
Pellegrini.

Caliguiri from Calabria and Pellegrini from northern Italy. Any suggestions on how to find info from Italy greatly appreciated. I am studying Italian but only for about the last 6 months so not real proficient yet.

thank you

Welcome to ItalianGenealogy!!
You must know the exact town of origin to locate records......do you have this info on both sets of names? Do you need help locating the town of origin?
Have you obtained all US documentation?

hi wldspirit, thank you for responding. i know that francesco and rachell
caliguiri were born in celico. i have been lucky enough to find some info on them and their family in italy. francesco came here in 1890 with rachell and my grandpa and his sister coming over in 1899 but i can find no records of their trip to us. i have spent hours trying. the info i do have i have gotten from us census reports for the years 1900, 10, 20 and 30.
the info is the same on all of them so it must be accurate.

As for the pellegrinis, that's the toughest one. i have found the passenger list for concezio when he came into new york in 1893. his wife anna i can't find anything on her either in italy or her immigration to the us. i don't know if she came over with him or later. i would think if she came with her husband she would be on the same passenger list and she wasn't. i don't know where in italy they came from. my grandma told me once her parents were from the northern part of italy.

what is the best way to find out where they came from? it seems almost impossible. any ideas????

thank you, nanci

Quick reply here.......going to be out most of the day,....but have you checked their naturalization status?? You may find the exact town of origin located in this paperwork.
Depending on who provided the information at the time of death, the place of birth could also be listed on death certificates, or obituaries. Church records at the parish they attended may also hold clues.
If the men were within the right age limit, they may have listed place of birth in WW1 draft registration, although it may just say Italy.

This site is excellent and provides better search results for Ellis Island,
has greater flexibility than the engine used by Ellis........

Hope this helps.......

For the name Pellegrini, search Friuli Venezia Guila. You should find it. Contact the Archivio di Stato if you don't know the name of the comune.

Good luck.

Chow!

I have to get dinner now.
